Melody's eyes lit up upon hearing the announcement of the tournament. Kai Hidata had her curiosity before. But now, he had her attention.
''Now that that's done, I'd be happy to take your questions miss Tomozawa.''
Melody took a drink that a passing waiter offered her, and smiled to Kai.
"Well, I was hoping you could tell me more about this school. And hopefully, more about this country as well. You see, I was born and raised in Japan, and I only came to Europe recently. I do have some influence in France, since my grandfather runs the Japanese embassy there. But as far as Silva goes, I'm pretty much a stranger in a strange land. If it weren't for Penelope, I'd be totally lost here."
Melody took a sip from the drink, and set it on the table. She then reached behind her back and took out her deck, giving Kai a cute wink as she did so.
"As for that tournament of yours......you can count me in! I'm dying to see what kind of dueling Liberta has in store for me!"

With a turn of her head, Penelope looked over to where Melody and Kai were last seen "I would have to ask my employer."
Penelope paused to think it over, worrying she may have been giving off the wrong impression.
"That's not to say Miss Tomozawa is a slave driver or anything of the sort. Rather, it would be derelict of duty if she needed me for something important and I were not around."
Penelope wasn't sure what to make of the girl, though she had to admire the boldness in asking a complete stranger to hang out with her. "That is not to say I refuse. Rather, I need a bit of forewarning to make sure your plans don't interfere with my job. It's nothing personal, of course."
Penelope looked over the orange-haired girl with a tinge of trepidation. The dark-haired girl was no stranger to ways of bullying and she knew better than anyone how cruel school children could be.

When she turned her head, Rina's line of sight changed as well. The assumed off-duty butler spoke of asking for permission from the Tomozawa girl. Rina was about to ask why, as the blonde had very clearly allowed the girl to enjoy herself. However, the young butler, as if sensing the redhead's confusion, explained what she meant by her statement: regardless of what she was told by her employer, she was still technically on-duty and needed to be available should Melody require her for something. It took Rina a moment to understand all that, though.
Thankfully, that didn't necessarily result is a 'no' response. She just needed more specifics of the interaction. Rina nodded twice, understandingly.
When asked what she had in mind, Rina chirped, "Uuuh, just chit-chat. I think that's pretty much it...." The Legold lass gazed upward and then pressed on her left-hand digits with her right's in order to count the ways. "Like, ...I guess it'll be some questions about butler-ing, for the most part; I'm curious about it. Other than that, just... stuff about me and the other guy, maybe? ...---And any questions you'd have, I guess? I dunno."
Rina then glanced over to the greeter who was still taking registrations for the tournament, confirming such to herself before facing Penelope again. "So yeah: we'll just hang out here and socialize. It'll be one of those 'whatever will be, will be' sort of things." Rina then decided to explain why she even wanted to speak to her in the first place. It was probably better to get that out of the way.
"Like, ...I saw you and was like 'Is she a butler? She looks so young!' Then you were free to do your own thing and I thought I could try to talk to you and ask you stuff while also keeping a fellow loner company - 'cause I figured you didn't have anyone here to talk to." she said lightly. "I didn't really plan anything out, though. It was just a two-birds-one-stone kind of thought. ...Is that okay...?"

A notable grimace appeared on Penelope's face towards the words the red-headed Legold was saying. The idea of unstructured fun did not sound appealing to the young Legold Butler.
"I do apologize miss-" she paused, letting the word hang for a moment before realizing she did not catch this girl's name. She made a mental note to properly introduce herself as soon as possible, and hopefully get the girl's name in response as well.
"However, I am what one would call a... highly disciplined person." Her right arm snapped up at exactly forty-five degrees as she motioned to her neck. "Everything from the Windsor knot of my tie," she then stuck out her right foot and pointed. "To the well-polished sheen of my shoes," she snapped her body back to a slightly rigid almost military-like stance of attention. "Everything about the way I live is planned and organized. I do not do well without structure and discipline."
She felt she had made her point however there was something else she felt she needed to say. "Furthermore, I do not enjoy being interviewed and speaking in an off-the-cuff sort of manner. I prefer, to be respectful towards the person asking the question, to give a well thought out response, not to fire from the hip with an answer."
Penelope paused, realizing that at this moment she was giving an off-the-cuff and fired-from-the-hip sort of response. She was coming off as rather rude and she felt it would be ungentlemanly and ignoble to go off on such a tangent. Instead, she should try to frame her response in a more positive light
"I do apologize if I come off as rather impolite in that previous exchange. However, I'd be more than happy to answer your questions but do not expect an immediate response. I would not want to taint my answer with a touch of emotion. And as for 'hanging out', I suppose we could do an activity however my only request is that it be well thought out and organized. If you need assistance in coming up with our itinerary, I'd be more than happy to oblige."
The dark-haired girl with the golden streak in her hair smiled at her. "By the way, my name is Penelope Springs. And you are?"
When the redhead heard the word 'miss,' she took a moment to process it before widening her eyes in preparation of interjecting. Too bad Rina took just a tad too long; the serious servant continued on, explaining her somewhat rigid way of life. As she did so, Rina could only stand in awe and acceptance of such a disciplined individual - yet, she also stood disappointed that she couldn't have an impromptu chatting session with the girl.
If Rina wanted to rope in the lady butler, it would need to be an organized event. That'd take some time and planning, obviously, and the orange-haired teen wasn't sure if she wanted to go to the trouble just to talk. Regardless, at the very least, she had questions to ask. She knew that there was no way that she could manage to keep up the sort of dedication Ms. Springs has, but she did want to try it to some degree. But that line of thought would have to wait with the tournament sign-ups beginning to wind down.
With another chance to introduce herself, she responded "Rina. Rina Kasakura." After a moment of awkward pause, Rina addressed Penelope's conditions for conversing. "---! Well, the planning stuff I'll have to figure out.... ...---Ah---!" Then an idea came to mind. "Is there any way I can keep in contact with you? Like, E-mail? Phone texts?" A moment of hesitation suddenly surfaced on her face. "---.... You are allowed stuff like that, right?"
Rina glanced over to the sign-ups again, real quick. ...Then one more time.
"If you are, can you write it down?" she asked as she gestured and backed away. "I'll be right back to get it from you after I sign up, okay? Real quick! Okay? I'll be right back!"
And with that, Ms. Kasakura hurriedly joined the remaining few students that were with the greeter. She was gone for four minutes before giving Aran a thumbs up and then phasing into an upward-pointing finger, when she saw him, and returning to find Penelope. She wasn't sure if the butler would've been able to write her number or E-mail address in time, unsure if she'd have a pen or pencil and paper on hand. Rina simply assured herself that the girl would be resourceful enough to get what she needed within a reasonable time.
"I'm back~!" cheerily announced. Feeling more calm, now that she wasn't in a hurry or distracted, she asked, "So, how goes it?" speaking vaguely about something very specific. The thought of asking for it clearly and directly had crossed her mind..., but to her, it felt weird; it felt as though she was Penelope's employer. She didn't want to give off that feeling.
Kai threw up his arms with uncertainty. "I'm sorry to say that my time here has only recently begun - much like yours, I assume," basing it off of the simple query that was given. He folded his arms as he continued. "I can certainly say it seems impressive enough. ...Of course, every school is likely to have their share of issues, whatever they may be...." Raising a hand from the fold, "I will say this, however: the academy has a lot of choice to it. No matter what you're aiming for, it has something to aid you towards that goal." As he thought about that, a simple smile surfaced. "Admirable, I'd say. For an academy to have everything - rather than specialize in a few - it could be fairly interesting to see where its roads take everyone," he said, playing up his friendly demeanor. "As for this country, [...]" Kai Hidata spoke of what he knew about Silva - or the city of Silvershine, more specifically, as well as a few other questions.
However, after discussions with Miss Tomozawa had gone at length, Kai found a good point in the conversation to remind his guest of the event that would soon be underway. "Before we continue, we really should get your name entered into my mini tournament. I'd hate to have any willing participant miss out, especially due to being occupied with myself."

"You're absolutely right," said Melody as she politely curtsied to Kai. "We should probably save any further conversation until after this tournament of yours is over. For now, I should probably head off to sign up. Please excuse me."
And with that, Melody headed off to the podium containing the sign-up sheet. After signing her name in elegant yet legible cursive, she took a look around the party hall.
"Now that that's done, I should probably see about Penelope. The poor dear's probably having a rough time of it."
Suddenly, Melody snapped her fingers. "Come to think of it, I should ask Penelope to enter the tournament, too! I bet everyone would LOVE to see her wonderful Dragonmaids in action!"
Once it seemed everyone had completed the sign-ups, Kai leisurely approached his butler and glanced at the list of names with a hand to his chin, "Hm. Impressive," eyebrows up as he nodded with appreciation for the number of duelists who entered. Aware of his boss's presence, the elderly butler responded "Quite the turnout, isn't it?" "Mm," Kai affirmed, just before holding out his hand to the name-taker. Knowingly, the sheet of paper with the list was handed over to the young Hidata teen. "Yugo, let Adam know to have everyone get the floor ready. We'll begin immediately." "Right away, sire." The aged man contently departed.
As he went and gave Kai's instruction to one of the other attendants to wheel the tables of food and refreshment to the perimeter of the floor, Kai, himself, had begun climbing his way up the center of the staircase.
"It's finally time for things to really get underway." He thought to himself as he glanced to the side, over and below the railing where a few students had gathered. "The ones who entered my tournament should all be true duelists, people willing to tackle the challenge without knowing what fate's got in store for them." Kai then focused ahead, to the top of the stairway as he accessed the phone on his duel disk. "If they're as good as I hope they are, this should be quite the showcase. And the better it turns out, the brighter it will burn in people's memories, with me to thank for it all." Moving towards the left as he progressed upward, the silver-haired boy reached the top of the stairway. He held the rail as he gazed down the long hallway before him. ".... ...And when that fire eventually fizzles out..., well, by that time, I should have something to show for myself at this academy besides hosting a great event. I will be a man of my own calibre; a stand-out over many, if not all." Before long, a deep-voiced man spoke from the duel disk.
"Young Mr. Hidata?"
His eyes remained forward. "Hello. We're about to begin with the tournament. Is it ready?"
"Yes, sir. It's attached and ready to go. Would you like us to depart now?"
"I would, yes. I'd like it to be here and operational within an hour."
"Can do. We'll be on our way. I'll keep you posted on our progress."
"Thanks. I appreciate it."
The call ended soon after. A lengthy clench of his fist preceded an about-face; his story was about to get underway. He eyed the congregating students, soon spotting Melody with her butler, Penepole.
"Everything starts here. Let's begin...!"
"EVERYONE. CAN I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION!"
Once the party-goers and the music had silenced to an acceptable level, Kai continued. "...The tournament is about to begin. As duelists up for a challenge, you've surpassed my expectations and we have ourselves a larger contest on our hands! I thank you all for your willing participation...! As you can see, the floor is being cleared to make room for your duels to take place. Naturally, not even this large lobby can contain every duel for the first round, so I will place a few of our greeters outside to witness the victories that occur out there. Each new round will begin once everyone in the previous round has completed their duels. ...I hope to see some truly outstanding battles take place! And for those not participating, feel free to stay and observe! The food and beverages are now along the walls, away from the action!
.... And now, with that out of the way, it's time to pair you up with your opponents. Listen carefully! [...]"
He continued on, explaining that there were 60 participants, so there would be 6 rounds with a few people with byes, selected at random. Soon, the pairing of opponents began, and once that was done, the tournament began.
As the rounds went on, many great duels and comebacks were had. While the second round was nearing its end, Kai was contacted by the man with the deep voice on the phone, letting him know that they had arrived and were ensuring something was properly operational. Midway through the 3rd round, Kai was informed that everything was ready. A few people at the party had noticed something large being worked on and they told others about it. At this point, there was no longer a reason to keep quiet about it. When it was time to announce the 4th round - the quarterfinals, the silver-haired youth addressed the murmurs, explaining that he had a replica of an old duel arena airlifted to the back of the Legold dorm. Similar in appearance to the outdoor version of the Duelist Kingdom set, it was modified by adjusting the player panels and shrinking down the zones a bit - and with them, all holograms, as well - for the inclusion of more zones to match modern standards. As a modernized replica, it uses all of the latest technology, but still captures the old-school feel.
For many of the remaining participants, this would be their first chance to duel on this historic stage - or to see it up close - or even knowing it exists! Kai announced that the semifinals, onward, would be conducted upon the old arena, and after the tournament is over, it will remain there for free use for another day before being removed. With this, even those who didn't participate can have access to it.
Following cheers, applause, and/or general positivity, Kai began the quarterfinals, after which, only 4 duelists remained - one of whom being Ms. Tomozawa. "So you've made it. Quite the feat, if I do say so, myself. ...Hm. I've got a different opinion about you now, Ms. Tomozawa." Impressed that Melody had managed to fight her way to the semifinals, Kai had to change his impressions of her; she was far more skilled than he had given her credit for - and her mental endurance had carried her this far. A lot of duelists would be making costly misplays by this point; could she keep up her streak, or would her mind's fortitude give out midway? If she continues to do well, this could even benefit him in the future, if he plays his cards right, so-to-speak.
The host announced the names of the top 4 duelists for the event: Lex Adams, Rina Kasakura, Yuwen Schiltz, and Melody Tomozawa!
Before long, Kai led everyone out to the back of the dorm where the modernized classic arena was located. Once everyone was there, he announced the pairings:
Melody Tomozawa vs Rina Kasakura Yuwen Shiltz vs Lex Adams
"The first duel of the semifinals will be Tomozawa and Kasakura. Duelists! Take your positions, and get ready to duel!"

If Melody had been doubting it before, she was sure of it now.
She had definitely made the right choice coming all the way to Europe to attend Liberta Duel Academy.
Hosting a massive tournament like this one was definitely the best way to kick off the school year.
And on top of that, Hidata had actually had an authentic old-school Duel Ring flown in for the tournament, just like the ones used back in Duelist Kingdom! Every duelist DREAMED of being able to duel in a classic arena like this one!
The duels that followed were the most fun Melody had had in years. Even the duels she'd had in junior high couldn't compare to this. Right from the getgo, Melody could tell that the dueling standards at Liberta were far beyond anything that St. Valufort could even dream of offering. Every opponent she faced had forced her to use every skill and fancy trick she could muster. But despite a few close calls, they were still no match for the might of the Madolche Kingdom.
And so Melody continued to advance through the preliminaries, feeling secure in the knowledge that Liberta would be the perfect place to polish herself. Both as a duelist and as a lady.
As Melody soundly trounced her opponent in the quarter-finals, she couldn't help but feel sorry for her butler Penelope. The poor dear had managed to claim three victories, only to lose to the very same imbecile Melody had just beaten. Melody made a mental note to give Penelope a nice pep talk when the tournament was over.
And now, it was time for the semi-finals. According to the bracket, her opponent was one Rina Kasakura. Melody recognized the name as the girl who had been talking to Penelope before.
With this in mind, Melody stepped into the red trainer's booth, and was lifted up by the platform. She silently shuffled her deck as she awaited her opponent.
Post by Rina Kasakura on Jun 30, 2021 23:09:32 GMT
As Melody's opponent took her place atop the soon-to-be-rising blue platform, the orange-haired girl felt her heart kicking into its next gear. The nerves that she felt, knowing that she has everyone's attention on her duel, rather than a much smaller portion of people focused on her, began to creep up on her. However, the rush of adrenaline that persisted thus far gave her the courage to step foot onto the historic stage.
As the ground beneath her rose up, Rina thought about her earlier matches - and the good fortune that she had, helping her make it this far. "The luck of the draw...:" pulling out her wireless deck box from her pocket. After a deep, cleansing breath, "Well, it's gotten me this far..., but now it's the semifinals." She gazed up at the shrinking wall in front of her. "I dunno how far my luck can carry me... - and I hope I still have enough of it on my side - ...but either way, ...." As the platform reached the top of its ascent, Rina's eyes locked onto her opponent for the penultimate round of the tournament. She tightened up a little bit, shown through her grip on her deck box. "...Either way, I really have to rely more on my skill to get to the finals."
As Rina stepped towards the monitor and playing field, she would give Melody a quick, simple, friendly two-fingered salute once their eyes meet. "Yo'z!" That was the extent that she could initiate right now with someone who seemed super rich and 'above her;' someone who was also, clearly, a strong duelist by being here in the first place. Afterward, an inwardly-cringing Rina opened up her deck box and shuffled her deck. At the same time, she mentally slapped her cheeks to psyche herself up - as well as to loosen up her nerves. "C'mon! Loosen up!" She stretched her neck and, once her shuffling was complete, she put her deck down where it seemed the Deck Zone would be located and then loosened up her arms and wrists, through shakes and rolls, in preparation to duel.
The dueling apparatus, in the meantime, scanned Rina's deck in preparation, as multi-colored lines travelled across the board and the hologram field. "...Loosen up, loosen up...; focus...; ...chill.... I can do this...! I started conversations with two people at this party, after all...! And when the duel starts, I'm gonna start talking like it's nothing, so if I put my mind to it, I can totally chat with wealthy-looking people outside of a duel, too!" Rina Kasakura thought to herself for encouragement. Sure, in a duel, you're announcing actions and exchanging banter in the moment, but outside of the duel, what was there to talk about between two complete strangers from two completely different walks of life? In all honesty, Rina couldn't think of anything meaningful that wasn't duel related.... ...--- BUT EVERYONE HAS TO START SOMEWHERE!
At that time, her deck's scan was complete and the monitor read 'DECK READY." If Melody's was also ready, the text would then swipe itself to the left, bringing forth the text 'DUEL!' signifying that the duel could begin whenever they were ready. Multi-colored lights on the duelist stands would then alert Kai - and the audience - to the fact that the duelists were ready to begin. As he gave some final words to the crowd, Rina, who hadn't noticed, was about to speak to her opponent.
"Ms. Tomozawa! Good luck~! When this is all over, can we get a bite to eat, together, sometime?" Completely out of nowhere...! Rina challenged herself to a third initiation of conversation - with a high-class individual! Rina wanted to have the experience - and if she's lucky, her butler might tag along, too. The tall, side-ponytailed teen knew that she was asking for a lot, however, and wouldn't fault Melody for declining. But now, Rina can't say that she didn't make the effort!
