APPEARANCE
Faceclaim Name: Sayaka Maizono
Faceclaim Series: Danganronpa
Hair Color: See Above
Eye Color: See Above
Height: 5'7
Weight: 110lbs
Mina has a svelte, model-esque body with long legs and slim frame overall. She presents herself in a more conventionally feminine way than Chaeyoung, although both exude femininity in their own right. Mina's outfits tend to be more on trend, but with her own personal twists thrown in, such as liking for bright colours and patterns. She stands out in her own right despite her dress sense being more classic than her friends, although perhaps this is because she can rock anything she puts on, as she carries herself with conviction.
PERSONALITY
LIKES:
- KPOP, although she tends to gravitate more towards girl crush or sexy concepts. This goes alonside her love for singing and dancing, often singing along to her favourite songs at Karaoke bars or at arcades, the dance mats feeling like her own personal concert. - Mina likes the more elegant things in life, the power in elegance itself, women who use their beauty for success instead of hiding it in order to be demure and fit in to society. It's what she likes about her favourite KPOP idols, in her friends such as Chaeyoung, and what she tries to bring in her own self. - Mina likes open minded people, ones who are not quick to judge and ones who can appreciate others for who they instead of putting them down for it. She keeps an open mind when it comes to others and likes getting the same respect in return, both towards her and towards Chaeyoung.
DISLIKES:
- People with overly traditional views on society, whether it comes to how women or even men should be, as she believes a lot of gender roles are fabricated anyway, and that people can be who they want. It also reminds her of her parents, a chapter she has yet to fully put behind her. Furthermore, Mina dislikes the type of people that shoehorn people or put them into boxes, particularly towards feminine women e.g. other women who hate on the more alluring femme fatale type. A woman can be powerful in many a context, including one who embraces their good looks and uses them for success. - Mina dislikes people who lack a sense of adventure, ones who are too comfortable in mediocrity. She and Chaeyoung have moved across the world to chase their dreams, Mina leaving her previous life without looking back, and it's shocking to her to see some people with very little drive, ambition or energy to go out there and do something wild. - Much like Chaeyoung, Mina dislikes people who are too by the books and uptight, for example in the context of the Academy, students who are too focused on simply learning and studying would quickly get boring to someone like Mina.
Personality - Strengths and Weaknesses: Outgoing with a confident persona, although can be a bit more reserved or subdued at times, not afraid to be out there or have the eyes on her, which can sometimes happen due to the aura she brings, as she still has a lot of energy to let out after being subdued for so long. Is supportive of her friends and loyal to people who like her for who she is, something she values as she did not get this from her family for so long. Has a charisma and magnetism to her but does not act in an over the top way unless on stage. She does not take herself too seriously, can let it all hang out and be wild, and doesn’t mind looking a bit rough around the edges in the process. She is trusting of others, although sometimes is a bit naive in this regard, as she tries to see the good in people, unlike Chaeyoung who is a slightly better judge of character and a bit harder to let her guards down. Mina has a vibrant energy, but can still have moments of sadness, especially when reflecting on her family and how they treated her. She still holds resentment towards them, and cannot help but feel slightly robbed of a good relationship with them. Mina is resilient and strong-willed, having been inspired to follow her dreams and her friendship with Chaeyoung giving her this - if she really wants something, she will fight to see it through. Much like Chaeyoung, Mina is a party-goer, seeking good times and thrills as opposed to being more disciplined, the only exception being the discipline she has towards her craft, and her attempts at becoming a KPOP star in her duo.
Unapologetically who she is, which makes her quite alluring as a person. Down to earth and fun loving, easy to get along with. Because of this she will get along very well with most people, especially people who appreciate those traits in a person. She is very loyal and would never betray someone she trusts. Is a good cook due to her time working the street food stalls in Junktion, and can cook up a mean Korean meal.
Her flirtatiousness, along with her general aura and strong personality, can come off as intimidating to some, and her combines no fucks attitude with Chaeyoung can repel some or be somewhat polarizing. She may not be able to get along with certain shy people if they can’t bounce off her energy or if they are standoffish towards her. People who don’t like hearing it how it is, or hearing it how she sees it could land her in trouble, as she does not back down, however she is a bit less severe in this regard and can tone it down in certain situations, whereas Chaeyoung has more of a temper that’s hard to settle. Her tenacity could also cause arguments or tension with people who insult her as she would rather confront the problem than shy away from it. However, she tends not to start situations like this. Like her friend, Chaeyoung could be used against her for manipulative purposes or to evoke an emotional response. Although much stronger than she was, Mina does have moments of feeling insecure and these can escalate in a setting such as an Academy, especially because she has placed herself in a situation where she knows nothing such as dueling, and her other skills are less important.
HISTORY
Mina was born in a conservative Korean household, and as a girl, she was held to a lower standard than her brothers in the family. From a young age she was told she can only be certain things in society, such as a businesswoman or a chef, and was taught to behave a certain way - well behave, prim and proper, prude etc. Subdued. Mina is the very opposite of reserved and subdued, though, and wanted to express that to the world. She had this desire all her life, a big ball of energy when she was younger that was often told to calm down, or to "stop being so embarrassing". It was a sad feeling and a frustrating one, making her doubt herself and even wonder if something was wrong. Really, the life prophesied to her was not the life she wanted, and she soon found herself rebelling against her expectations, the sadness she felt turning into even more frustration and resentment as she developed into her teenage years. She was very ambitious and had dreams of being a superstar, as she loved music throughout her life, and looked up to her KPOP idols, as they were a beacon of hope for her, and inspired her to chase her dreams. Like previously mentioned, she rebelled against the pressures of conformity, developing her own unique style and honing her singing abilities, as she always knew she was talented, all the while being very adventurous; she would often sneak out at night to do things by herself, including her favourite place to go, the Arcade, with such anarchy being a byproduct of how she was feeling in life. It gave her a thrill, but also a feeling of freedom from the restraints of life, even if only for a few hours every couple of days.
During this time, as a weird combination of being friendly and wanting to put herself out there, but also anxious, she met one of her, now, best friends, Chaeyoung, at the local arcade. Mina often went by herself or with one or two others, keeping to herself, but she would always notice Chaeyoung's group. How could you avoid seeing her? At first, Mina found her to be intimidating, such a strong presence, but also cool and confident, and an amazing dancer. It was as if she wanted to be like her, but was nervous to approach her. Chaeyoung luckily must have sensed this, and went over to her herself. Mina unloaded the energy and excitement she was feeling, which was received well, and they found themselves hitting it off. Two girls with very different styles and likes, yet they were so similar in spirit. They quickly bonded over love of music, despite differences in taste, and Mina found out that they also shared the same ambitions in life, of being a superstar in their own right. Not only did they laugh and have general fun together, but her friend offered Mina a form of escapism from her oppressive household, as she often stayed at her house and went out with her, as well as being the first person who truly understood her and supported her goals. Chaeyoung offered her the keys to a whole new life, one where she could be free, out in the city together, while Mina unknowingly provided Chaeyoung a real friend. It was a shared connection, an unspoken one at that. The more they spoke about wanting to try music, it came to one fateful day where they decided to actually speak it into existence, and the pair teamed up as musicians, and when they were old enough, they organized everything and scrounged up the little money they had, thanks to Chaeyoung’s parents, and with their blessing, moved to Silvershine to pursue their music career as a duo, agreeing that it would be smart to go abroad and market themselves there, but also agreeing that Silvershine was perfect for them, the bustling cityscape of SS Metro being very Seoul and Tokyo-esque. They shared a small apartment in SS Metro and Mina had to work on a food stall to pay the bills, while Chaeyoung did her dance classes. It wasn't easy, but her hard work and determination was all worth it to be finally free from everything that held her back. Mina had left without saying anything to her family, though, that bit of closure she may have needed was not an option in her eyes - she had left without turning back and was now living the life she wanted, one for herself and not for others, even if her past still haunts her sometimes.
After a few months of saving money, Mina and Chaeyoung rented a studio to start working on music, which is where they discovered that the dueling academy was accepting applicants. Initially writing it off and something unimportant to them, upon discussion, they thought it could at the very least be a way to get their names out there, maybe even a way to brand themselves - peak duelists that can also be stars? Surely it had never been seen before! They saw it as an opportunity and took the risk, applying and making it in, even if they had next to no knowledge of Dueling itself. They were always ones to make impulsive decisions and take gambles in life, and now it is their time to see where it all goes. Besides, campus life always looked like fun, a place where rebels such as them would leave their mark. Mina is excited about the thrill of the unknown, even if the idea of being completely clueless makes her nervous at the same time.
