Inside of Liberta Academy's faculty building, on one of the office floors, a little bit of chatter and a lot of clickety-clacks filled the air. Tens of people were hard at work doing written or computer tasks at their desks, or discussing topics that some students wouldn't fully understand.
As could be expected on this Sunday morning, a few workers are a bit weary or still a tad groggy. One such person - a somewhat young adult male with tired eyes and a little stubble - was filling out dorm room assignment changes to update the school's records. As he was doing so, another employee walked into the office who was headed in his direction. The young man caught sight of them out of the corner of his eye: a seemingly slightly older man who looked to be slightly higher up on the workers pyramid. They were carrying an envelop with them. Soon, eye contact was established between them as the older, clean-shaven man neared.
"I'm back~*." The older man greeted the desk worker with a deep, smooth-sounding voice, kept somewhat low-volumed to blend with the decibel level in the area.
Likewise: "Hey. More changes?" the younger man tiredly thumbed up at the white envelope.
"Yeah, one more." He handed it over once he reached the desk without bumping into the waste bin located on the floor at the far right side of the worker's desk. "The 'Head' decided to give in to that probation kid's request."
"? The one that broke the window, before, right?"
"Yeah. One of the teachers was saying it's probably to keep it from 'accidentally' happening again." gesturing air quotes.
The deskman weakly arched a brow. "...That bad, huh?"
The older man shrugged, closing his eyes for a second. "Beats me. I just think probationers should be kept to themselves.... Anyway, that's the instruction from Rose. It has who the kid's staying with written in there. 'Rin...' 'Rin~...'" He tried to remember what Headmaster Rose said to him. "'Rin Kanata...? Tanaka...? ...Kosaka? ...---Well something like that; ---it's there," he points back to the envelope. "They're gonna wanna start the moving-in process of the big stuff on Saturday."
"The end of the week, huh...? Alright. I guess this'll take priority, then.... Well, it's just this one request, so it shouldn't take long. I've got my break coming up; I'll finish it after that."
"I hear ya." Understanding the sentiment, the older man half-turned, almost ready to leave. "It's actually my day off, but I had stuff to finish up and wanted it out of the way. I'm outta here, now, so I'll leave you to do what you do. Take care, buddy."
A smile; "You, too."
As the higher-up left, the younger man stretched for a second or two before tearing open the mail he was given. "Yikes.... You won't catch me sticking around after hours; that's for sure.... ...Let's see~.... . . . . .... 'Rin Tanaka.' Okay." He tossed the envelope into the trash bin, not needing it anymore. The paper with the instructions was placed face-down to the side of his desk as he moved his computer mouse around and clicked a few things, bringing up a digital form - basically the room transfer paperwork.
"Eric: still coming with us?" a female voice called from behind him.
He angled around to address them as they began to approach - with a concerned smile - down his right-side aisle. He was seen being spoken to and they wondered if he was stuck doing more work that would delay his break. He said, assuringly, "Yeah, I'll be right behind you."
"Oh, good." Two others soon got out of there office spaces as well. "I'll see you down there, then."
"Yeah."
They nodded and proceeded forward as Eric put away some of his personal items before closing up and grabbing his work bag. Once he turned off his monitor and was set to go, he trailed behind the other two who nodded and passed by him.
The only thing left out of place was the letter of instruction, which rested haphazardly at the far right side of the desk.
--------------------- ---------------------
....
. . . .
An envelope envelops it..., and a delicate hand fades in underneath... as a day passes... and the scene changes to a room dimly lit by afternoon daylight - as well as hallway light coming in from behind the uniformed girl; a Liberta student. Holding up the envelope into better view, it appears to be the back of it. "Huh." The feminine-voiced individual turned over the envelope to the front side, revealing a name: 'Rina Kasakura.'
The envelope had a mildly fancy border design on the front. A hand closed the door and flicked a switch on the wall, turning on the light in the doorway where the tall, orange-haired, and side-ponytailed Liberta student - stood inquiringly with her bag on the ground.
"Wonder who it's from. ...." Could it be a secret admirer? No, she hadn't really done anything worth admiring. Curious, Rina Kasakura tore open a top corner and then put her right index finger inside, turning the envelope vertically. Pulling down and outward repeatedly, she used her finger to 'scissors' the top of the envelope open.
She pulled out the piece of paper inside and began to read it silently.
".... . . . . .... ! Oh! I'm getting a roommate!"
She scanned ahead and spotted another name - apparently the incoming occupant. "'Masumi.' ...? ...I've heard that name before.... Who was it, again? .... . . . . Mmmnnngh--- oh well." she locked the door behind her and began to take off her shoes. "As long as they aren't trouble, it'll probably be okay. ...---. .... .... Wait...." After taking off her shoes, she stepped further in and eyed her gaming console connected to her TV. "It'll be okay..., right...? ...." Rina paused a moment then continued into the room, putting down the envelope on her bed and looking again at the information sheet. ".... They're moving in on Saturday. The weekend.... ...Wonder if I'll get to meet them before that..." she wondered as she gazed out of one of her room's windows, folding the paper back up in her hands....

"-devastating attack from Drytron Meteonis Draconids! Yuuka Kaiba takes the match in a landslide victory!"
The sound of a phone playing a recording of a professional Duel Monsters match pierced the irritating sound of humming from a desk fan running at full blast. Even with a makeshift blockade to keep the dorm room's shattered window shielded from the elements, losing that "airlock" of air conditioning in such an embarrassing manner made this room quite uncomfortable to live in for the time being. The desk holding up the propped-up phone was cluttered with miscellaneous low-rarity cards, empty ramen cups with plastic forks, two empty bottles of iced tea, and a notebook with nonsensical doodles and notes with a pencil smack dab in the middle. The 5'2 first-year registered to this stuffy, messy dorm leaned back against the desk chair, legs propped up on the opposite corner of the table and hands folded behind her head.
"Ughhhh... 'Watch the pros for tips' my butt. These guys are way too complicated to get anything I can use out of it! First she Ritual Summoned a Level 12 using two Level 1's- which isn't even allowed according to what people said in class- then a bunch of complicated mumbo-jumbo about 'recycling the Ritual Spell' and Attack Points!" she griped aloud, lightly pinching the bridge of her nose with a cringe. The dry, warm atmosphere of her dwelling perfectly mirrored her distressed, fatigued mental state wrapping her head around her 'studies', if one could consider her lunatic-esque scribblings as 'notes'. "And Legold students are supposed to have this stuff down like nothing? And I thought my stuff was hard. And I'm in the easier section."
Swinging her legs off of her desk and leaning forward again in her chair, Masumi rested her elbows on her knees and held her cheeks in her hands. Looking down, she saw her trash can. The shards of glass from the window incident weren't there anymore, given it happened just a few days ago. The circumstances were much like this one: a study session where her boredom got the best of her. One minute you're solving a few scenarios on a worksheet, the next you're pretending to be Buster Blader swinging around an umbrella before having said umbrella slip through your hands and sail straight through your dorm room window. Resident Services wasn't too happy to hear about her flawless impersonation, and after being written up for that, her request for a roommate was 'perfectly timed'... To be the worst possible response in the moment. "Man... I just had to go and ask right after breaking a freakin' window. What was I thinking? They were just gonna send me a fancy letter with that cool design, saying I get a roomie after I basically trashed school property?"
The sound of knocking, followed by a piece of paper being slid underneath her door. Intrigued, she stood up in surprise and paced over to a neat white rectangle with an intricate design on its border, and 'Masumi Sakamoto' printed on the front. The timing was too perfect to the point that it was scary. "...No way, nuh-uh," she mumbled in shock, hurriedly snatching up the envelope and slipping her finger through the top flap to cleave the adhesive and free the contents of the envelope. For someone that didn't like reading non-comic books, her eyes darted from start to finish of the memo like a world-class speed reader.
"WOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOO! Iii'm gettin' a roo-mie! Iii'm gettin' a roo-mie!!~"
A harsh knocking on one of her walls sounded out, causing her to flinch and drop the envelope in surprise. "GAH! S-Sorry, sorry! Soundproofing's bad without a window, right! Ah ha, m-my bad...!" Marcy apologized profusely facing her broken window, forgetting for a moment that her screams of joy probably pissed off her neighbors several times a week. Squealing in hushed delight, she hugged the letter close to her chest and threw herself onto her bed back-first, raising the paper above her face to gaze at it once more. "Finally! Let's see... 'Rina Kasakura', huh? They... Sorta sound familiar? I kinda forgot a lotta people I've met here, to be honest. Where have I heard that name before... Oh well!~" the B-rank Duelist shrugged off her own inquiry, tracing her finger over the bottom corner of the letter. Glancing back to the envelope, another small slip of paper remained: a contact card for her new roommate, complete with email and phone number.
"Move-in date on here is Saturday... Too much time!" Masumi mused, smirking and picking up her phone to start typing up a message to the number on file. "Let's just set up a meeting before then! Wonder what deck they play. Oh, or if they're into music! Or manga! Of course they're into Dueling since they go here for cryin' out loud, but the more we've got in common, the more fun stuff we can do!~"
> hey!!! 〜( ̄▽ ̄〜)(〜 ̄▽ ̄)〜 this is masumi from the roommate thing!~
> i found ur number on the letter i got about moving in on sat! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
> saturday is really far away tho (ㄒoㄒ) do u wanna meet at the courtyard or something before that??
> im free any day after class, hmu and we can hang out! ヾ(@^▽^@)ノ

...Yes, Masumi Satori Sakamoto uses a 'kawaii emoji keyboard' and types like a cringeworthy beast: complete with multiple rapid-succession messages and very little concern for grammar. She sent these messages like a machine gun pumping out words, finishing the entire string of messages in an amazing 75 seconds tops.

Not long after Rina folded up the paper in her hands, her cell phone vibrated somewhat noisily from her skirt pocket for a second. Noticing it, she glanced in that direction. "? Oh'p, My phone. .... Oh, just a message." Perhaps it was her mom or dad texting her. "---...? But mom and dad don't usually call at this hour.... ....Is something wrong...?" A smidgen of concern spread across her face. Her brothers almost never call her at all; while it could potentially be one of them, the redhead thought it highly unlikely, so mental guard remained up as she reached for her phone.
Pulling it out, she took her time turning on the screen and unlocking it, inhaling to prepare herself, taking a big, deep breath. Just after she did, another vibration occurred in her hand; another message, it seemed.
Opening her text message program, "...??" she found that she got a message from someone new. She tapped the screen, opening the message. It turned out to be from that 'Masumi Sakamoto' person that she'd be rooming with soon. "Oh! It's her! ...How~...---??" Almost instantly, before Rina could read the second message, a third message appeared below it. "So fast...!" Reading the two messages, Rina shifted her eyes to the fancy envelope then proceeded to pick it up and look inside, noticing a small card with Masumi's contact information on it. "Aaah. ---!" Over the next 20 seconds, like clockwork with the rest, 2 more messages came through; Rina read them, emojis and all, with a grin on her face.
"That energy...!"
Rina went over to her work desk - half-cluttered with textbooks not need today, a pop magazine, and two manga - and hunched over it, her forearms stabilizing her position as she moved her wheeled chair aside, preferring to stand.
Rina pondered for several moments, "Hmmmmmm...," she whispered out, closing her eyes, tapping the back of her phone, and swaying slightly as she thought how to respond. After over a minute, she then started typing up her replies:
> Yo'za! \ ^.^ Rina hittin' u up
> Nice t'meetcha roommate-to-be!
> Yeah! Let's meet up! I actually just finished classes, so I'm free right now if you are!
Rina paused... then sent another quick message.
> Actually, wanna meet there in about 30 mins. or so if you ARE free?
She smiled before putting down her phone on the desk, stepping away to put her backpacked items where they should be.

Masumi didn't hesitate one moment as soon as she saw the request to meet up at that very moment. Not only was the prospect of finding a new friend exciting, but she wanted to meet up now! Plus, anything was better than trying to solve the puzzle that is how Drytrons basically break the rules of the game in terms of Ritual Summoning. Reading is for nerds, even when it came to cards. She typed up a storm again as soon as she was certain Rina had stopped typing, adding in more of her emojis to polka-dot the chat menu.
> totally!!! (*ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ*.゚
> i was studying some stuff before texting you ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ but it can wait, its hard and i got burned out anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
> ill be wearing the pink backpack with kuriboh patches! see you there!~ (*・∀・*)人(*・∀・*)
Darting up from her seat, the hyperactive girl practically lunged for her open closet to pull out her school uniform blazer. Marcy made sure to take it off before her study session, given how hot her room had gotten since the incident. "Cool! Just need to- ...A-Actually, maybe a quick shower first, eh heh..." she trailed off, gently placing the blazer back.
Despite being a whole five minutes early to the rendezvous, the now freshened-up first year frantically pulled on the sleeve of her blazer while one-strapping her backpack as she bolted out of her door, slamming it shut behind her as she darted down the hallway towards the courtyard. She was lucky no on eon the Disciplinary Committee was nearby to see her mad dash, lest she be written up for running in the halls. The thin nature of the ice she walked on went right over her head, and dumb luck kept that blissful ignorance intact. (Shoot, shoot! Didn't think it would take that long to dry up: curse you, long hair!!!) she mentally kicked herself, tugging the second strap on her opposite shoulder before breaking into a full-on sprint and breaking into the clearing and stopping right before the fountain with a small skid. Her dark brown school shoes kicked up a bit of dust coating them with a light layer of dust from the floor that she quickly brushed off with the back of her hand as several wandering students shot her looks wondering what her hurry was.
"Ooh, I just can't take it! I have no idea what she looks like, and I can't wait to see her! C'mon, clock, move faster!!~" the Silvolver student complained, withdrawing her phone and quickly typing up another message.
> HERE!!!~ \(▽ ̄\( ̄▽ ̄)/ ̄▽)/
...The subtle bouncing up and down on her toes made those looks she was getting even more disturbed. She looked like she was a thrilled four year old trapped in a student's body with how impatient and excitable she was making herself out to be.
Hearing her phone buzz atop the desk, Rina soon returned to it and checked the message that she received. "...." Her smile said it all. The redhead put down her phone again.
"Alright. Better get set." She took off her blazer and the next message came through. After checking the text, Rina proceeded to get ready for the meetup, checking the last message later on.
---------------------------- By the time Rina made it out near the courtyard which was situated at roughly the center point of all of Liberta's buildings - about 31 minutes had passed since Masumi's acceptance of the meeting time. "A little late; not too late, though; it's fine." She had received Masumi's arrival message a few minutes before heading out the door; that girl beat her there, but that about rang true for the impression Rina was getting from her. Still, being late wasn't cool - especially for the first-ever meetup between them. ...That said, the redhead didn't feel like rushing and getting sweaty when they'd just be hanging out for the day.
The large, grassy plain was overly decorated with bright stone walkways leading from each building into the center tiled area, with trees and small garden plots spread out and patterned along the circumference of it. Rina was moving at a calm pace, going along the walkway from the Legold House's direction onto the mosaic-tiled ground ahead. The tiles, themselves, were filled with many shades of white, blue, and gray, creating a round, mosaic surface that, if seen from a bird's-eye view, formed the image of a majestic Blue-Eyes White Dragon preparing its 'Burst Stream of Destruction.' The lass glanced around discreetly as she walked by one of the benches neatly littering the area, carefully looking for the identifiable feature that Masumi mentioned:
[Masumi] > ill be wearing the pink backpack with kuriboh patches! see you there!~ (*・∀・*)人(*・∀・*)
"Pink backpack with patches~... pink backpack~...." Her eyes attempted to view every girl who was hanging out in the area even if they were with other people - those who were eating, students who were dueling, one who was using a drinking fountain in the area, and even two who were trading cards near the Blue-Eyes White Fountain display placed dead-center in the courtyard; three Blue-Eyes White Dragons beautifully shooting streams of water in three different directions. Rina searched and searched for the girl in question; found a couple with pink backpacks but not with Kuriboh patches on them. The Legold student casually circled around to the other side of the courtyard.
"Now I wish I got here earlier...." muttering to herself, realizing how long she was making the energetic girl wait. Two minutes had passed since Rina's arrival - five since Masumi's. As Rina reached the other side, continuing her search, she soon spotted another pink backpack from this side of the Blue-Eyes fountain. A girl with long, brown hair, looking a little odd, bouncing or bobbing about (or some other thing), seemed to be its owner. Anxiousness? Restlessness? Excited? Rina couldn't tell what it was, but the vibes she was getting from her felt familiar.
".... ...?" Rina paused and narrowed an eye in thought. ".... Is that her...? I~ wonder~...." Rina squinted her eyes toward the backpack again. From that far away, she couldn't make out the dark blotches on the girl's pink 'shell.' Even as she cautiously and discreetly approached from a distance, she couldn't quite tell. She had no choice: "I'll have to get closer to see." She never let Masumi know what to look for, so this was the only way. Approaching the long-haired brunette from her right side, about 10 yards away, the Kuribohs could faintly be made out.
An internal sigh of relief; "She's the one, alright...! I knew it! A contained smile surfaced just before she began her final approach.
"Masumi...? 'Xcusey-'xcusey?" Despite some of the noises in the area, it wasn't too noisy that her voice would be completely drowned out.

Marcy's attention was stuck on a hair trigger: one that Rina's call to her set off and released the flaming trebuchet boulder of hyperactivity right in her direction-
"YOU'RE RINA?! WOO-HOO! Roomies!!~"
...Over the top, all-out yelling from her. So it seems the font size of her texts were a de facto cap on her expressiveness after all. With a bright, rather childish grin, Masumi immediately lunged forward like a starved tiger to envelop Rina in a tight hug. It was rather comical to behold, given how the first-year flunkie was at least a good five or six inches shorter than her 'roomie'. "Geez, you got no idea how weird it was to have no roommate at first! Plus with the window situation and classes getting super boring and hard, it's gonna be SO much better to have a new friend to live with!~"
Upon closer inspection after backing off, it seems that Masumi had quite a bit more notable paraphernalia on her backpack than just the Kuriboh patches. A fair amount of pins from various comic-based fandoms dotted the upper lobe of the bag, with a keychain mate that appeared to be... Fluffal Dolphin? Those beady eyes and that life preserver ring around its tiny body were unmistakable. Moving up to her face? Those were pixelated dinosaur stud earrings. Back down to her wrist? Her Duel Disk was covered with so much glitter and sparkles it was as if she gave it to a kindergarten class to decorate before wearing it. With so many clashing aesthetics as part of her getup, her words alone probably weren't the complete reason she got looks every so often.
"What was I gonna say again...-! OH! R-Right, ah hah! I, ah... I-I won't break a window twice on campus, and I already used up my first shot, so we're all good! It's, uh... L-Long story. But I'm a little uncoordinated, not dumb! No more umbrella swinging... I-Indoors," she admitted with a shifty rubbing of her hands, followed by an awkward chuckle. Once again, not something to tell a new roommate right off the bat to set a good tone. Then again, her intentions did seem pure on the outside: it was hard to hold THAT much against her. "That being saaaaaaid... It's super-duper-ultra-chocolatey-great with gummy bears on top to meetcha, Rina! I was totally gonna wait until move-in to surprise you or something, but I just couldn't wait once I found out they actually took my application! I originally thought my roomate wouldn't be so tall, but as long as you don't hide stuff on high shelves, this is gonna be great!~"
Yes. Because that was the concern at the moment. Not her seemingly boundless energy reserves, not her volume issues, and not the fact that she apparently BROKE A WINDOW BEFORE THIS. It was the height difference that was the most pressing matter to mention to Rina.

Rina smiled as Masumi turned towards her. A quick nod and wave were made to the new roommate "H'Yeah!" before Rina was suddenly rushed and hugged insanely tightly when she was only expecting a run to get closer. "---!! Whoa-whoa~!!" Rina was caught off-guard and almost lost her balance from the force of impact, fighting with all her might to remain on her feet. Her left arm caught in the hug and her right arm outward; the surprise on her face was evident. A nervous grin and chuckle quickly followed.
Masumi then explained her living scenario "---. ...?" But something she said lacked context, so it caught Rina's attention. "Window situation...?" Did Masumi's room not have a window? Rina wondered if that was possible, or even humane. Maybe it just wasn't working. But to respond to Masumi quickly while in her embrace, she answered "Totally! I hope we can get along and have fun from start to finish!"
Once released from the hug, Rina heaved a sigh of relief with her head held high. In the quick moment as Masumi was trying to recall something, Rina was able to take a good look at her future roommate. There was... a lot going on; Masumi's mouth wasn't the only thing busy about her. But, in a way, it was kinda neat getting to see someone actually gussied up like that.
But then..., the brunette mentioned breaking a window on campus. "Wait, what...?" Rina said softly as Masumi kept talking. ".... ...." Rina's maw hung open with uncertainty. What was she supposed to say to all that? 'As long as you're carefully, we should be alright?' Was she just supposed to laugh it off? It wouldn't be good to have their window knocked out - especially if it's during winter or summer time...! And the fact that she was swinging an umbrella around didn't sit well with Rina. Not only could a window be broken, so could her gaming console, too! What happened to cause that, anyway...!? Was Masumi bored? She's already shown to be a bit overactive....
...All of this was on Rina's mind..., as she continued to not address her concerns, worrying that she'd sour the mood too much or come off as a nagger. "Mmmnnn...." Instead, Rina closed her eyes and avoided scrunching her face, trying to hold back any comments she'd normally bring herself to say.
With the now slightly subdued girl reiterating that it's nice to meet the redhead, this presented Rina an opportunity to refresh her mindset and try to let Masumi's old issues wash away under the bridge. ...Mostly....
Opening her eyes in response, then later noting the high shelves comment, a scaled back toothy grin surfaced. "Well I wouldn't do that - ...probably...." not wanting to lock herself out of that possibility in case it's needed. Though, there's only one high shelf in the room, and if one stands back far enough, they could see almost anything that's put onto it - or at least, that's what the tall girl thinks. "---But hey, it's real nice to meet you, too!" Rina put forward a right-hand fist as opposed to an open hand. This was her way of officially starting off this relationship on good terms. "Here's to getting to know each other better as we go along."
