Liberta Duel Academy is a Yu-Gi-Oh! roleplay site set in an Alternate Universe (AU) version of the original series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, set roughly 50 years after the end of the Dark Side of Dimensions movie. Liberta Duel Academy is set in the city of Silvershine located in a fictional small country known as Silva, somewhere along the western coastside of Europe.
September through October 20X1 - Welcome, Class of 20X4!
The new school year at Liberta Duel Academy is here! Students - new and returning - are adjusting to their school life and getting themselves settled in. The entrance ceremony presented the principal's address, spoke of Dorm Rankings, and introduced the Student Council. Alongside the standard Master Duels, the experimental "Specialty Duels" were announced to those new to the academy. So unpack; duel a fellow or two; explore the academy and the city of Silvershine! Action; adventure; slice of life; it's up to you! How will you have yours unfold?
The purple-haired boy let out an impressed chuckle towards Masumi. She really was into these things! That was deep in the Monster Slayer iceberg! She had the misprint?! Doku's eyes winded. "No way! Come onnnn now you gotta show me!" He playfully chuckled, folding his arms. "But if not I get it."
OH SHIT! It worked! Phone number acquired! "I'll text you some time, we could play or something!" He slipped his phone back into his pocket.
Oh right! She didn't know about his sister. Well, Masumi was his friend, so he didn't mind telling her. "Yeah! So..." He pulled out his desk drawer, it was full of various junk, some pens, papers, old school work, digging deep he pulled out a deck box, opening it up he pulled out his personal deck. A pendulum-based Abyss Actor deck that hadn't seen use in a couple of months. Handing the stack of cards over towards his friend.
"So. My sister is sick, the Aromages are my sister's deck. She wanted me to use it for her! Those actors are my real deck... BUT I use these Aromas currently!"

"Huh? Your sister's sick? Dude, like... Really? I dunno how siblings work, but I think you don't swing by and go 'hey Sis, instead of chicken noodle soup and medicine I'm just gonna take your cards'. I mean, yeah, being outside and Dueling probably wouldn't help much for getting better anyways, so..." she trailed off, gently caressing her chin as she tries to imagine the situation. In her mind, 'sick' never registered as 'terminally ill', but something akin to the seasonal flu. As such, she found it hard to imagine that Doku's little sister really wanted him to use her Deck. If it were her, she wouldn't let go of even one card for a second unless she knew for sure that it would be a gift!
Taking the Deck, she gave it a quick browse by sliding cards one at a time with her thumb. (So much blue on these... Wait, these are Pendulum cards, aren't they?) she remarked mentally, squinting and taking a closer look at them. Yep: a good chunk of these cards were Pendulum Monsters. While she had very little experience using them herself, one of her Duel proctors did have Pendulum cards in their Deck. "Ooh, I think I know how these work! You're supposed to, like... How was it again? They work like Continuous Spells, kinda? One goes on each end of the Spell/Trap Zones, and when you've got both, you get to summon a bunch of Main Deck monsters as long as their levels are in between those two numbers on their blue and red arrow thingies...?"
Well, that's one way to explain it. A stilted, borderline incorrect explanation, but an explanation nonetheless.
"...Huh. Can't be too hard. I'm kind of in the dark about how these Pendulum things are working anyways. I have Edge Imp Cotton Eater and Fluffal Angel in my own Deck, but Pendulum Summoning doesn't really click with me all that well yet- OH! Wait, I've got an idea! How about you show me how it's done, then I can give it a shot? If this is your Deck, you must be really, really good at Pendulum Summoning! Maybe I could learn from a master, then strut my stuff if I draw it in my Frightfur deck!~"
Doku shook his head, Masumi really was airheaded huh? "It's not a cold... she has a weak immune system," he just prayed Masumi would comprehend his explanation. "She's been sick since she was little." He tapped his chin. "She gets sick easily so it's hard for her to go out, I mean a school is full of germs. So no way she could actually go here..." He shook his head.
"Oh, My Pendulum's? Yeah, you got it about right, It's pretty strict though, they're high-risk high reward since you're using so many cards in your hand." He chuckled. He watched her look through his card. "You missed that they go to the extra deck face up when they're destroyed and some... weird mechanics."
Masumi wanted instructions? Oh lovely, how could he refuse? Doku nodded his head. "Sure I'll teach you! I'm kinda the pendulum master~" No... you weren't Doku, but anything to impress the ladies I guess...
Doku reached under his desk, placing his duel disc onto his desk, slipping in his deck. The deck was shuffled before it dispensed out some of his cards. A starting hand of 5. "Okay so, let's say we're going second..." he drew from the top of his deck, up to six. Wow! His hand was perfect for this demonstration.
He used his second hand to show off two of the cards. "So we have a scale of 1 and a scale of 9!" Placing them where the Pendulum scales would go. Scale 0 Madona and Scale 8 Twinkle Comic Relief "Alright Masumi here's your first test. If you have a scale of 0 and a scale of 8 which of these cards can you Pendulum summon?"
Her 'hand' would have Level 8 Evil Heel, Level 1 Extras, and Level 4 Leading Lady. The only card that couldn't be played would be Evil Heel, hopefully Masumi would be able to figure it out.
"Just don't mess up my Leading Lady! She's the big star of the show..."

"A weak immune system? Why not, like... Work it out or something? There's gotta be a gym somewhere around here. Germs are so tiny, so they can't be that strong," Masumi asked, showing an incredible lack of affinity for both biology and common sense. At this rate, it was a miracle she didn't offer to Duel away the germs threatening Doku's sister.
She stayed quiet and listened patiently as Doku explained the basics of Pendulum Summoning. "So these things go in the Extra Deck... Oh, but that means you can't bring them back with stuff like Monster Reborn. But then you can't summon them like..." she mumbled, leaning over Doku's shoulder and tracing her fingers along the "field" that he had set up. The cobweb-infested cogs in her head were turning at maximum speed as she quietly hummed to herself processing the information. As the revelation struck, she gasped and nodded in agreement. "Oh, I think I know! Back when I first got Cross-Sheep, I had to learn what to do if I had to summon Fluffal Angel like this. Pendulum cards go face-up in the Extra Deck when they get destroyed, and you can get them back if you Pendulum Summon them to either the Extra Monster Zone, or a zone that a Link Monster points to! That's it, right? I'm so good at this!~"
Doku's small quiz question had her stumped, though. So much for being "good at this". "Let's see here... Aw, why'd you have to go and choose such big numbers right off the bat?! Hold on, I got this..." she continued on, showing that iconic critical lack of understanding that put into question how she got into Liberta. By any stretch of the imagination, it was evident that her skills were severely underdeveloped to a deeply concerning depth. "So these have those numbers, and that's not... Shoot, was it levels or the Pendulum Scale thingies? Geez, this thing's really hard... Why are they different colors and on different sides if they're the same? Hrmm...!"
Pointing out all three monsters, she nodded with a smile. "Got it! All three of these can be Pendulum Summoned, right? 'Cuz, uh... All their scale number things are between 0 and 8? I think that's right, right?"
Doku quickly shook his head, looking at Masumi, shaking his head sighing. "It doesn't work like that..." He explained. "She takes medication for it but without it's risky, she could get sick from just about anything" He explained, he folded his arms. "It's expensive so it's hard to pay for it sometimes" He let out a heavy sigh. "But... me and my dad try our hardest. I love her a whole lot..." He smiled softly.
He nodded. "Yep, exactly!" she seemed to understand his Pendulum explanation. He patted himself on the back. He chuckled. "Well, good for me~ Aren't I the best!" He shook his head, looking towards the pretty girl. "Right, well glad you understood that!" He said smiling a little bit. "I'll be your little Pendulum teacher!" He watched, as she thought about the answer to his quiz. Quickly shaking his head. "Nope" he took the cards from her, laying them out. "It's based off their level, not their scale! SOOOO. You can summon these two, but not Evil Heal since he's level 8." He tapped his card. "He has to be between 0 and 8." He said, hoping she understood that run down.
"They also have effects in the Pendulum zone, like spells." He placed down Madonna tapping her lightly. "She let's me search my deck, so she can get me my Actors" He said. "You can do some cool combos as well!" He placed a scale of 0 and scale of 8 in his zones and demonstrated a summon for Masumi. Two level 4 monsters were on his field. "Now I can link, or XYZ summon! Any questions my pupil~?"

Doku's correction of her guess put a pouty frown on her face as she scowled down at the cards with a confused look on her face. "What?! But that's so complicated! It says the number 8 right there, so why aren't they the same numbers that you can summon between? Sure, there's no Level 0 monster as far as I know, but still..." Masumi trailed off, shaking her head dismissively. As simple as the condensed explanation was, poor Marcy just wasn't getting it.
"At least I sorta get the other part. These things have other effects that work like Continuous Spells in the upper box, and monster effects in the lower box. But then... Wait. Can you use monster effects while it's a Spell? Or what about Pendulum Summoning with Pendulum cards that aren't in the backrow? Can you put them facedown like Spells? Ugh, all this strategy stuff is starting to make this mechanic feel more like homework than Dueling should be!" the first year cried out while holding her temples. "I like Fusion stuff a lot better, just 'cuz it's super easy!"
It was true: part of the reason she chose Fluffals after reading the fine print was because Fusion was the easiest summoning mechanic for her to use consistently. "I haven't really said it much, but my folks actually made me try a few Decks before I got my own. The Synchro ones had way too much math and I got confused with keeping track of Levels, the Xyz ones felt really slow 'cuz I'd be stacking monsters without being able to do stuff, and Link... Eugh," Masumi gagged, crossing her arms with a disappointed frown. Despite how eager and expressive she was, this explanation was rather flat for her normal cheeriness. She sighed with a subtle shake of her head.
"...Hey, uh, sorry that I don't really get the whole Pendulum thing. I'm kinda used to it since it happens a lot, so don't think you're a bad teacher or something."
With a playful chuckle, looking towards Masumi, her frustration was amusing he couldn't lie. "It's between, so since it's eight and zero. You can summon one and seven!" he listened to her trail off, it was kind of charming in a weird way.
"Exactly. They're also spells!" He pointed to each effect. "No, you can't use their monster effect." She sure had a lot of questions, but did he blame her? Not at all, those funny-looking cards could sure be confusing. "You can't put them face down, you can only Pendulum summon if you have scales. They're basically stuck if you can't destroy em" He tapped the two cards in the Pendulum Zone. Praying Masumi understood his explanation.
It was pretty obvious that she liked fusion I mean, Doku knew her deck. "Pendulum gives me a lot of options, helps set up XYZ and Link summons! Synchros are pretty cool though!" He patted his extra deck with a soft chuckle. "Links really help out my Aromas, do Fluffles have a link?" He asked Masumi. In this age, it felt like every deck got a link printed... Doku walked over to his bed, sitting down before stretching his arms out letting out a quick yet heavy yawn.
"Well, at least you don't think I'm a bad teacher..." His face heated up slightly, as he awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. "I'd be a bad teacher if I gave up!" He said boldly. "What if I made you do it in a real duel?" He suggested. "ORRRR we could pause the lesson and grab some lunch perhaps~" Oh lovely... Doku is already back on his bullshit.

"Weeeell... Not exactly?" Masumi began to explain with an uncertain shrug. "It's technically not a 'Fluffal' card, but it fits both in function and fashion! The card's called 'Cross-Sheep'. It has a Link Rating of 2, and helps whenever you Fusion Summon because once a turn it can bring back a Level 4 or lower monster from the Graveyard." She reached for her right hip, only to pat down on her waist and remember that her Deck Box was drying at home. What a pleasant coincidence.
Unfortunately for Doku's attempt to flirt, however, talking about Duel Monsters and expecting Marcy to be able to focus on anything else was a fatal error. "A real Duel?! Are you sure?! I can, like, use your cards, right?! I-I totally get it if you don't want me doing that: most people don't trust me with their cards 'cuz I can be a little clumsy at times! We can, uh... Buy a few sealed packs at a store and try it with those if you don't want to! Or maybe some place has rental Decks: I know that's a thing for people nowadays that don't have their own Decks!" she frantically explained with a hyper undertone. Pendulum Summoning seemed so exciting to her, but damaging Doku's cards was a risk she was wary of taking.
(Ah geez, if he isn't down to go find some Pendulum cards with me outside, I might bend his personal Deck! If the Aro-whatevers are his sister's Deck and they don't have Pendulums, then I'm gonna have to use his personal Deck! Please, pleeeease tell me you're not gonna make me, dude!) she prayed, veiling her inner panic about the situation with a kind smile.
Doku let out a soft chuckle. "Damn Masumi you're better than I thought~" He complimented her. "My Aroma Link lets me add a plant when I gain life points~ The Abyss Actor Link, it lets you summon one of your scales, pretty nice!" He explained the effects of his cards.
Masumi seemed super excited, worried, and cautious all at the same time. Honestly, it was silly to make Masumi pay for packs (besides, Konami doesn't print Pendulums anymore). "Masumi, calm down..." He tried to give her a reassuring smile. "I trust you okay? Just... be careful with my cards, there's no apple juice or hair dryers!"
Once again, Doku rounded up the two-deck boxes, placing the stack of Abyss Actors on a table. "Just... be careful okay?" He chuckled. "If you want I can use my Abyss Actor deck and you can use the Aromas?" He suggested. Placing both decks on the table. "I can show Pendulum off if that's better, I trust you." He laughed a bit. "Just lemme know which deck you wanna use..." He sighed lightly. "Just... calm down a little, like I said~ I can't be labeled a bad teacher~"

She pouted and placed her hands on her hips with a somewhat insulted glare. "Hey! You think I'm just gonna use your Deck when you get to do all the cool Pendy-thingy on your side?! I totally got it... M-Maybe! I can probably figure something out here! It'll, ah hah... J-Just take me a minute to figure it out is all. But you learn better by doing, right?~" she begged, automatically scooping up the Abyss Actor cards right away rather than waiting for Doku's reply. Her movements were much more awkward and careful than before when she was gathering the cards, only to skim through the Deck and be met with several multi-colored cards. (Hoo boy, there's so many of them... And I don't know their effects that well. The only one here I can really see is Abyss Actor - Superstar, and-)
(Wait a sec. That combos with that, but this comes in to... Wait, wait! That's it!)
As if possessed, the first year smirked and shot Doku a sly wink. "Well! No use just talkin' about it all day: let's get this party started!~" Marcy cheered, giving the deck a rather thorough shuffle. For as uncoordinated as she was, card shuffling seemed to have evaded her general clumsiness. Despite not bringing her Deck, she threw her Duel Disk on and opened its display with a fancy flourish. The bedazzled device whirred to life, once again with the "No Opponent Found" indicator blinking on display...
"LET'S DUEL!
...
"...O-Oh. We, ah... Don't have a lotta room, do we? Aw geez, and here I was gonna see all the cool Pendulum animations and stuff... J-Just promise not to laugh if I wanna practice my cool catchphrases, 'kay? They're still a work-in-progress since I barely figured out how to work these things!" she pleaded with a rather pathetic wince as she separated the Extra Deck from the Main Deck and set her field, popping a squat in front of Doku's table. It felt oddly nostalgic to play like this. Without the fancy holograms and dramatic acoustics, Duel Monsters was just a regular card game. One that Masumi liked to scream and shout during, but a card came nonetheless.
"RIGHT! This is another mind game, though: trying to throw off my rhythm with no Solid Vision, huh? Well, it's not gonna work! With my five cards in hand- and a Duel Disk that I'm just gonna use as a Life Points calculator for right now 'cuz math is dumb and hard, I think I'll take the first turn!" Masumi declared, scanning her opening hand... All Pendulum Monsters. All of them were Abyss Actors: two copies of Mellow Madonna, Extras, Wild Hope, and Curtain Raiser.
"Then let's see how you handle this opening play! I set the Pendulum Scale with Scale 0 Abyss Actor - Mellow Madonna, and Scale 7 Abyss Actor - Curtain Raiser!" she boasted, practically tossing down Mellow Madonna into the left Pendulum Zone and Curtain Raiser into the right. So far so good: no protests from Doku yet as to her technique. (Perfect. I've got fully working Pendulum Scales for my first Pendulum Summon- but is that really what I should do? If I wanna win here, I can't be so predictable with my plays. He's had this Deck longer than I've had it- not to mention heard of it in the first place. Obviously he'd see a Pendulum Summon coming right now... But wait! There's more to a Pendulum Monster than its Scale! They have Pendulum Effects!)
"I activate Curtain Raiser's Pendulum effect! Once per Duel, when I have no monsters, I can Special Summon it right from my Pendulum Zone! Raise the curtain, and prepare for a show!~" she cheered, sliding the card over in Defense Position to her center Main Monster Zone. Even without the fancy holograms to work with, Masumi seemed cheerful as ever treating her monsters (if they could even be called her monsters) as if they were comrades. Hyping up inanimate objects was another one of her many quirks.
Reaching for the third card in her hand, she quickly slapped down another one to replace Curtain Raiser on the right: a Scale 2. "Replacing Curtain Raiser on our backup cast for this show is the southern showman, Abyss Actor - Wild Hope! But don't let his range fool ya, 'cuz his Pendulum effect allows me to target an Abyss Actor in the other Pendulum Zone and raise their scale to 9! Mellow Madonna's gonna exit stage right... That is, right into a grander audience's view! Now my scales extend from 2 to 9!~"
How a novice like her managed to extend her play to get an even larger scale was astounding, especially when she struggled to even consider how the actual summon worked in the first place. Then again, Fluffals as a deck did have a lot of Spell Card usage, so perhaps resource management in that department wasn't one of her numerous weak points. "Don't let this prima donna's chill vibes get to you either, 'cuz she can call forth an Abyss Actor from the Deck at the cost of 1000 Life Points! I know your Aro-phages or whatever like to be up in Life Points and all, but once you see what we've got going here, you'll wish that you had a much bigger advantage. I choose... The star of our show, Abyss Actor - Superstar!~"
"...Lemme, uh... Just grab him real quick. Shoot, this is so much cooler with Duel Disks," she stated with an embarrassed chuckle while rolling down her Life Point counter on her Duel Disk's calculator app. The show did have its moments of anticlimax, and at this point was much more of a parody than an epic. Masumi mumbled to herself trying not to bend or damage the cards, eventually pulling out Superstar and stuffing it into her hand.
Clearing her throat, she nodded with another smirk. "Awrighty, let's do this thing! I call forth Scale 2 Abyss Actor - Wild Hope, and Scale 9 Abyss Actor - Mellow Madonna! I'm swingin' for the fences this time wiiiiith... A Pendulum Summon!~" she cheered with a gleeful giggle, placing down her two monsters one at a time. "Take the solo, Abyss Actor - Mellow Madonna! It's showtime, Abyss Actor - Superstar!"
Despite the inherent lack of flair from the move, Marcy jumped up in celebration of her successful summon. She shouted and pumped her fist into the air, practically bouncing around and doing a funky little dance accompanied by some humming. Childish? Very. Charming in its own unnecessary way? Sure. Mature? Heck no. "Aww YEAH! How's THAT for a Pendulum Summon?! I'm totally getting the hang of this! Now let's see... Oh, right! I activate Abyss Actor - Superstar's effect! No self-respecting performer goes without a script once in a while, so my buddy here can help me get just that from my Deck! It might get sent to the Graveyard at the end of my turn... But hey: who says the star needs a script after one glance-through?~"
"...Just, ah... Gimme a sec to get it," she calmed down once again, this time digging through the Deck once more for a script. Interestingly enough, they were at the bottom of the Deck. Lucky that she was searching them instead of drawing into them. Satisfied with her choice, she revealed her card and set it in her backrow... Only to immediately activate it once she was done. "Let's just skip to dress rehearsal. I activate Abyss Script - Opening Ceremony! Just in case you thought it'd be easy to start getting a whole lot more Life Points than me and use all those weird effects, this card gives me 500 Life Points for each Abyss Actor monster I control with a different name. Since my Pendulum Scales don't count as monsters I control, I gain 1500 Life Points: putting me at a comfy 8500 on my first turn!"
"Aaand just for good measure, I also activate Mellow Madonna's effect when I use Abyss Script - Opening Ceremony: I can summon an Abyss Actor Pendulum Monster that's level 4 or below from my Deck, but it goes to my hand during my End Phase. Aaand... Lemme grab it again..." Masumi sighed, rolling her eyes. She had forgotten how annoying it could be to grab the cards one needed in a non-Duel Disk setting. Shuffling was of no difficulty to her, but it still took precious time that could have easily been used to plan and battle. Settling on a card, she placed it down in Attack Position next to Superstar. "Here comes Abyss Actor - Sassy Rookie! He'll be going back into my hand soon, but it's just a little foreshadowing to show off what I have in store...~"
"...And finally, I end my turn! Sassy Rookie comes back to my hand, and you're up just like that! So? How'd I do?~"
