Riku had stepped out of the dorms for a minute or two, wanting to get some fresh air rather than sit in his dorm all evening. He had also changed out of his uniform and put on some casual clothes. It wasn't anything fancy - just a plain white v-neck t-shirt, a pair of jeans, and his dark gray hoodie that he wore over top of his shirt. He debated whether or not he should take his deck and duel disk with him or not, staring at it as it sat there on his computer desk. He eventually let out a sigh and said to himself, "Might as well. I doubt I'll duel anyone this late in the evening anyway." With that, he took the duel disk, strapping it around his right wrist. Once he made sure that it was firmly secure around his wrist, he grabbed his skateboard that sat by the door, the door shutting on its own. As he walked towards the main entrance, he was already wincing from the sunset that greeted his eyes.
Not only that, but he also saw the silhouettes of people, as well as heard their voices. Once he got outside, his eyes began to adjust to the sun’s rays, seeing that the crowd of other students seemed to be watching something, or rather someone. As Riku got closer, he saw a boy performing magic tricks. “Well, that’s something ya don’t see every day,” Riku thought to himself. He also definitely wasn’t in his school uniform either. Riku clapped with the other students, deciding to give his fellow student the applause he deserved. “Neat trick ya did there,” Riku smirked after the last word escaped his lips. Riku had decided to approach the other student deciding to try and be friendly for a change. He was the silent type. Most people thought that Riku was either a bad boy or shy because he hardly ever talked to anyone since he moved into the legacy dorms. If his younger siblings were hear, it'd totally put a smile on their faces to say the least. Despite his family actually living in Silvershine now, Riku hardly ever had the time to go visit them. However, he managed to stay in touch when he could, and to them, that's all that mattered. "Name's Riku by the way." He said, introducing himself casually.

It had been... Quite a week for Allen, by this point. A week ago now, he dueled Arasen Ishikawa right after midnight, pulling victory out of his hat after almost mucking the game up for himself by forgetting that "Drytron Meteonis Draconids" could attack all special summoned monsters. After ditching Arasen to deal with the guards (or so he assumes), Allen the next day had to redo his math homework due to Timothy, a person from Uniteal, asked to copy it... and took it to the faculty lounge and actually used a photo copier in front of the math teacher to copy it. Allen had to redo his homework as punishment. Timothy got detention... That he skipped. Allen, and two of his friends, Blake and Roger decided they were gonna... Well, for lack of a better word, lynch him. Sadly, they never got that chance that day due to the aforementioned detention skipping.
That day, instead, Allen had his first, but most likely not last, encounter with a first year who has been getting a fairly bad reputation, Shinsei Tsuyokawa. The Japanese leprechaun got on Allen's nerves fairly quickly due to stomping on his math homework that he was redoing, and after a.. very verbose insulting spree, him and Allen ended up dueling. Allen had his field entirely demolished, and made a comeback from a completely empty board and won thanks to one of Allen's favorite cards, as well as one of his main go-to's, Magi Magi Magician Gal. With her effect, Allen took control of Shinsei's Satellite Warrior, and defeated him with his own monster. Thanks to the bad reputation he had gotten due to his own actions, Shinsei was apparently laughed at under the crowds breath as he stomped off and essentially swore revenge on Allen over it. Allen even found chocolate and a thank-you note from a girl in 1-B on his desk the next day.
Finally, Allen thought he could get revenge on Timothy..... but after that day, he has been absent from school due to a streak of bad karma. This however, didn't stop Allen's weird week, as there was another event that happened during it that was noteworthy. A chat with the student council president, relating to the pro dueling team "Critias". Allen still couldn't quite get out of the weird funk that conversation left him in, despite it being a few days since it happened.
So, Allen decided to do his favorite past time to kill some stress; Practice his stage magic. Finding a nice spot outside the dorm after classes, Allen set up in his usual attire, and proceeded to start practicing. As per usual, people stopped to watch. With as often as Allen does this, it's become a common sight and he's recently taken to explaining some of the easer to do tricks. Due to them requiring someone to be skilled in sleight of hand, usually none of the people he demonstrates the tricks for can actually manage them properly, but that's to be expected. There had been some who asked to learn some more... 'practical' tricks, but Allen could tell that was a can of worms he wasn't wanting to deal with, so he turned them down.
As he was finishing, he gave his usual bow of putting his left leg behind his right, holding his left arm out to his side, and turning his right arm into a bend in front of himself. Then, when he started to clean up his stuff, he heard someone come up behind him and speak. Turning to the source, Allen was about to say thanks when he stopped and had a suspicious expression for a split second, before switching back to a smile. The smirk on this person's lips gave Allen some red flags, as usually the only ones that smirk when they say things like that to him are the sarcastic ones looking for a way to insult him, or people wanting him to teach them 'practical' tricks.
Hearing the guy introduce himself, Allen replied in kind. "I'm Allen. Allen Akiyama." He replied, looking up and down the guy. He saw the skateboard sitting under the guy's arm, and felt like the latter was the more likely scenario for why he was being chatted up. However, Allen knows well that you can't judge someone based on their appearance. After all, he was thought dwarves were supposed to be jolly, happy souls by Snow white, but Shinsei was for what seemed like all intents and purposes a ball of rage and arrogance. Wanting to avoid an awkward silence, Allen figured he might as well ask about the only real thing he could ask about. "So.... Do you have a last name or?..." He asked, as he figured it was common for people to at least give their last names if introducing themselves.

"Masamune," Riku said, rubbing the back of his neck. He never really liked giving his last name due to his father. Everyone knew about Touma Masamune. Riku honestly wished he forget him - what he did. Riku's father didn't say goodbye before he left, and that was what hurt Riku and the rest of his family the most. "I'm guessing you've heard that last name before," Riku had asked rhetorically. A part of him hoped that Allen had never heard that name before, but then again, there were a lot of people who knew the pro-duelist, Touma Masamune. Riku wished he could forget about him, just like he did to him - his family.
Given Riku's general attitude, many find it hard that someone like him would want to be a pro-duelist. His nonchalant attitude sometimes gave off that vibe, but that actually couldn't be further from the truth. The reason he wanted to become a pro-duelist wasn't because he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. Nor was it for the fame and fortune. He wanted to prove the world, and somewhere deep down, he wanted to prove to himself that he was better than the man who left without saying goodbye to his family. Riku gazed up at the evening sky, sighing lightly before speaking again. He wasn't really good at this 'being social' thing. At least he was trying though. "Sorry. I'm not very good at socializing. I figured I'd give you credit though. I've never seen someone do magic tricks before," Riku admitted. What's more is that Allen seemed to like it a lot. It wasn't something that Riku was personally into, but seeing it for the time was pretty cool. If he's into magic tricks, something tells me he uses a spellcaster type deck like mine. Riku thought to himself.
'... Masamune as a surname?' Allen thought, wondering if the guy got teased in school or had weird expectations placed on him due to the historical relevance of the name. However, Allen was then kind of..... Well, no. It wasn't kind of, but very confused by the rhetorical question the guy gave. "....... I'm Japanese? Of course I know the name Masamune? There was the extremely famous swordsmith Masamune, and there was the legendary General Date Masamune. There was also a few poets from the early 1900's who also were surnamed Masamune if I remember correctly." Allen responded, extremely confused by the attitude about the name. "Why, was there someone famous in your family? I don't keep up with celebrities." He added on, being point blank about that he doesn't know anything about the guy's family.
... The pause of Riku being in thought definitely did not help Allen's confusion. when he apologized for being bad at social interactions, it took Allen every fiber of his being to hold back the words of 'Yeah, that much was obvious from you spacing out.', that he almost blurted out, but managed to keep in his thoughts. Instead, he responded more politely. "Don't worry about it. You're doing fine. Or at least better than Timothy... Speaking of which, if you meet a guy from Uniteal with a broken nose, don't let him copy your homework. He'll use an actual photo copier in front of the teachers." Allen said, with a very clear grudge in his voice at the idiot he was talking about.
However, Allen quickly shrugged off his grumbling. "Anyway, thanks for the compliment. I picked up the hobby from my father. He was a really good guy from what I've heard about him." Allen said, with a bittersweet and somewhat lonely expression on his face. One he didn't even know he tended to make when he spoke about his father. "According to my mother, I'm a LOT better at them than he was." He added on.

head in the clouds
Riku was glad knowing that Allen had no idea who his father was. "Yeah. He was pro-duelist," Riku said with slight scoff, once again showing his discontempt. "He's also famous for running out on us," Riku added, talking about his family. After Riku had apologized for his poor social skills, Allen stated that he was better at it than another student by the name of Timothy. After further explained what happened, Riku spoke once more. "I know who your talking about. He tried copying my homework and when I told him no he whined about it. Honestly, that could be the reason why he asked you for help," Riku mentioned. He kinda felt bad that Allen had to deal with that, but as for Timothy, he deserved a good deck in the face. Seriously, who does that sort of thing? If you're gonna copy someone's homework, don't do dumb crap like that. Hell, at least be smart about it," Riku thought to himself. Hopefully Allen didn't decide to start blaming him for the incident.
As the two of them continued talking, Allen started bringing up his father. The way he talked about him made it seem like his father wasn't around either. The only difference was that Allen liked his dad, unlike Riku. He also noticed the lonely expression that Allen had on his face after he spoke. Riku knew that face all too well. But for him, that loneliness transformed into hatred for his old man. That's when Riku chimed in once again. "If you're good at magic tricks like that, then I'm sure you're just as good at dueling," Riku added. "What's your ace monster?" Riku asked. He wasn't sure if Allen would open that information up to him or not, but then again, that was his choice.

Hearing the professional duelist comment, Allen was kind of impressed. "Oh, cool. I honestly didn't get into following any pro duelists, so I don't know him." He said, apparently that being a bullet dodged after Riku mentioned their dad abandoned them. '.... Okay, there is clearly a lot to unpack there for him, but I'm just... not gonna prod that one open.' He thought, deciding that it really wasn't his place to attempt to get the guy he just met to spill his guts about his father. "If it's any consolation, my father isn't around either. He passed away on a business trip before I was born." Allen explained, though he didn't elaborate on the bunch of oddities about it. Such as that the next of kin, IE his mother, were informed of how he passed away, or how it was that he passed away in Silvershine.
Allen didn't say anything to the info about Timothy, aside from let out a sigh. It amazed him that Timothy was that stupid. He hadn't met Riku before today, so it was clear they didn't share math class, and their math teacher has been caught on record saying she assigns different homework to each class so that they can't swap homework between them. Yet Timothy was stupid enough to ask someone from another class for their homework to copy?.... Allen seriously was wondering if Timothy paid someone to take the exam for him to get into A rank. At least Karma got Timothy back. In a cosmic twist, it's even funnier given he slipped in his dogs crap, and he actually named his dog 'Karma'.
Riku seemed to have got the same idea that Allen did when it came to not prodding the other about their absent parents, and thus was happy to keep off of that topic. Hearing the assumption that he was good at Dueling, he couldn't help but reply. "Well, I did beat the proctor without losing a single lifepoint, but it was just a really bad match-up for him. He told me to not hold back and play at my best, and his deck couldn't get up to speed fast enough having it's normal summon messed with." Allen explained, recalling how his proctor kind of floundered due to dark magical circle banishing his monsters on normal summon, preventing him from getting enough materials on board to go into his best monsters.
Hearing the question about the aces for his deck, Allen had a bit of a sheepish look to his face. "Ah... Well, my deck is kind of weird. at least half the monsters in the maindeck, and the entirety of the Extra deck could count as aces in the right situation." He explained, though he did elaborate more. "However, I do have two specific go-to monsters in it, which is what I put down for my aces on the application." He said, though the sheepish smile stayed as he recalled the complaints the person filing his paperwork gave him about putting a monster from a different mechanic than his dorm down on it as an ace.
"The ones I put down were 'Dark Magician the Dragon Knight' and 'Magi Magi Magician gal'." Allen said, expecting a confused reaction from Riku. After all, he was acutely aware of the weird reactions people seemed to have about using monsters that weren't part of your dorms mechanics outside of sheer utility, like Dragunity Knight Romulus. Or at least it was outside of pendulum users and some of the link users from Uniteal. But so far they've been nothing but crazy weirdos who seem to do some of the dumbest stuff possible out of sheer spite at existence... But considering the only ones he's actually personally interacted with have been Timothy and the chick from class B who threatened to get him in trouble over dodgeball, he didn't have the best examples. Still, that confusion with the other two dorms has actually won him games before, and was a key part in beating Shinsei.

head in the clouds
Riku was kind of glad that Allen didn't ask more about his father. Both of them had seemed to understand without actually saying anything about it to one another, which made things not only easier for Riku, but easier for Allen as well. As their conversation progressed, Allen talked about his practical for the entrance exams he did. Riku scratched the back of his head as he spoke. "My proctor ... ended up being blown away. I kinda overdid it a little when I got mad at what he said to me. It was kind of dumb to lose my cool that way, but I still managed to win ..." Riku admitted thinking back on his own entrance exam. He was facing off against a Proctor utilizing Jinzo. Because of that he couldn't rely on Eternal Soul, but with how things played out he didn't need to.
I activate the spell card that I just drew! Secrets of Dark Magic! With this, I can fusion summon using fusion materials from my hand or field to fusion summon, with one of the fusion materials being Dark Magician or Dark Magician Girl, but since I have both, It won't really matter much. I fuse, Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, Berry Magician Girl, Apple Magician Girl, and Apprentice Illusion Magician to fusion summon Quintet Magician!"
After that particular memory replayed in his head, Riku also simultaneously paid attention to what Allen was saying at the same time. "So, he uses a Dark Magician deck, just like me ..." Riku thought as he quietly took out two cards from his deck box that was attatched to his belt, revealing his own Dark Magician as well as Dark Magician Girl to Allen. "These are my aces," Riku said, knowing right away that Allen would without a doubt notice them. Despite them using the same exact archetype, Riku for some reason had a feeling that Allen's deck as well as playstyle was far different from his own.

Allen kind of had a side-eye at Riku's answer to how he passed his exam. He remembered the end of his exam, and the chat his proctor had with someone at the end over an ear piece. Riku's commentary made that part make a lot more sense, as he could loosely guess that Riku caused it.
"You played well, but I do have some advice. I know I told you to play at your best, so I can't fault you with how you played, but definitely keep an eye out for the opponents deck. You made an accurate judgement in that my deck would be slowed down considerably with your interruptions on my normal summon, but nowadays most decks laugh at their normal summon getting interrupted and can play through it without a care." The proctor said, as Allen could see him writing down the score as he gave out his advice, before catching a specific thing on the form he was filling out. "It says here you're aiming to be a pro duelist? You need to take my advice even more seriously. Whether or not it's the most pragmatic movie isn't as relevant in that case, but more so a matter of 'what gets the crowd going'. Usually, waiting to stop a big summon or a power play makes for a more entertaining duel. It's riskier, but that adds to the crowds excitement, so it's something helpful to keep in mind." He explained, before frowning as he put his finger to his ear piece. "Say that aga- What do you mean you pissed off your examinee?.... No you can't fail him because he beat you that way. ... No, that's your own fault. If you can't give advice then tell him he passed and go." The proctor said, talking with someone on the other side of his earpiece, before realizing that he hadn't dismissed his examinee and turned off the feed. "Sorry about that, you're free to go. You passed this portion with flying colors. The results will be announced in a few days. You'll be sent an email confirmation at that time." He said, before turning off the hologram feed on his end.
'Well, I guess that explains it?' Allen thought after recalling that exchange from the the end of the exam, assuming that Riku was the cause of that discussion. However, Allen was kind of surprised to see the cards that Riku pulled out. Seeing them, a thought of how Riku beat his proctor crossed his mind, with it probably being either Quintet magician nuking the board, or Master of Chaos banishing all of the opponents monsters. Shrugging off said thoughts, he spoke. "Oh, that's awesome, you play a dark magician deck too?" He asked, even if it was kind of obvious. "What does your build look like, if you don't mind me asking." He asked, interested but trying to be polite. It was considered a rather rude thing to do to ask others what their deck's build was, as that could mean never winning again against the person you showed it to, as they could choose to counterbuilt against you and prevent your deck from functioning. However, Allen didn't think it would be much of an issue in this case, as Riku already knew Allen also played Dark Magician, so whatever would counterpick Allen that Riku could use, Allen could just as easily use against Riku.
