"Koa'ki Meiru Maximus, use your special ability and destroy Frightfur Tiger!" the second year commanded, sweeping his right arm in front of him dramatically with a confident smirk. His Life Points were untouched, and his opponent was...
"I-I activate... Ah! W-Wait, no, that's not even something I can use right now! Hold on, time out! Gimme a few minutes, I'll figure something out!"
...Trying her best?
"Sorry, Sakamoto-san, but I've given you that chance four times now, and you still had nothing to chain: Maximus, declaw that cat!" he denied her request as the dragon let out a roar that tore the tiger into cotton clouds. The shock of her only shot at winning being blasted to shreds made her grit her teeth and shield herself from the Solid Vision cotton clusters. "H-Hey, come on! One more turn, I just need one more-"
"Nope, not this time! Let's battle! Koa'ki Meiru Maximus, attack her directly and end this thing!" he called out, prompting the monster to let out another burst of power gathered from the Koa'ki Meiru core keeping it up and running. Masumi cried out and shielded herself from the Solid Vision with her arm again, crouching down and gritting her teeth with a shaky groan. Her Life Point counter rolled over to 0, and a big "LOSE" spun in by her status image. As the Solid Vision faded in front of her, she fell back onto her rear with a sigh.
"Aw man... What am I doing wrong here? That's five consecutive losses just today! And this time I didn't announce my opening hand on accident!"
"That was easy. A little too easy. I get you're excited, Sakamoto-san, but have you actually... Studied since you enrolled here? No offense, but if I didn't give you the benefit of the doubt, I would have finished you off in three turns."
"Uh... Studying?"
"...R-Right. Well, I've gotta go. Rematch me when you've improved more, okay? Try fighting a first year instead of going after the upperclassmen." With a respectful yet piteous wave, the boy removed his Duel Disk, pocketed it, and left the small duel arena.
"Ah, okay! See you... Around, I guess...?" Marcy waved after the upperclassman before removing her own Duel Disk and exiting the arena as well. She headed directly for the open hallways before opening her shoulder bag and digging out a sugary green drink. It wasn't the best nutrition-wise, but it was melon-flavored, fizzy, and had a cute little marble to pop before one could drink it. What wasn't to like? She paced the hallway, sipping the drink while browsing her phone. (...'Studied'? Do people really do that all the time here or something? That's, like, the third time someone told me to try doing that. But I'm totally fine! I mean, I was good enough to pass the entrance exam, right? So I don't need to study... I think? How hard can it be? Just mix a Fluffal with an Edge Imp, and I can Fusion Summon something bigger than the parts. It's not really that hard.)
“Maybe I shouldn’t have stayed up late binging that show…”
Releasing a stifled yawn, Jinsei made his way to the Duel Arena, hoping that watching a couple of duels would wake him up. He didn’t quite get enough sleep last night, for it went from doing a bit of studying to watching a show that he wanted to finally get into. After what seemed to be only a couple of episodes (which it was really to the mid-season finale…), Jinsei finally fell asleep...only to wake up a short couple of hours later. “Thank goodness I didn’t miss my morning class, though. That would have been bad.”
Eventually, he made it to the arena and took a seat at one of the seats on the bleachers, watching the various duels going on. They began to slowly wake the young man up more and more, his eyes growing wider and wider at the various plays and monsters that were happening. His eyes soon rested on a nearby duel where it was Koa’ki Meiru vs Fluffals. He caught the last bit of it before the girl with the Fluffals lost and the duel was a clean sweep. Jinsei cringed at the display, wondering if her opponent was that good or was she that bad? Watching her walk away, he figured he would get the answer himself directly and decided to follow her into the hallway.
“Hey there! That was a good duel you had. Koa’ki Meiru decks are sometimes hard to deal with, but your Fluffals are pretty cool.” Jinsei offered a small smile at the girl once he caught up with her.

“Hey there! That was a good duel you had. Koa’ki Meiru decks are sometimes hard to deal with, but your Fluffals are pretty cool.”
Pulling her drink away from her lips and turning around with a curious hum, Masumi came face-to-face with a green-haired boy with a peculiar smile. Normally, she'd be the person to approach someone else out of the blue: this time, however, was a pleasant surprise!
"Huh? Oh! Hi! Y-Yeah, ah ha- he really had me in a fix there, huh? That's the second year class for ya: just one year here definitely makes all the difference. Guess I challenged him in the first place just to get a taste of what it's like, heh.~" she mused with a small smirk. It was a nice way of saying "I bit off way more than I could chew", but to say it was downplaying her loss was simply untrue. In reality, Masumi really did just want to see how far she could get against someone with much more experience than her. Aiming higher than she knew she could perform meant that eventually she would surprise herself... Or so her thought process went. In practice, it just meant that she'd find disappointment in all the wrong places.
Crossing her arms, she shook her head with a chuckle. "So you liked it, huh? Yeah, I love using these little fuzzy bundles of joy! Sure, there's an... Interesting thing they do when it's time to Fusion Summon, but I got over it pretty fast. Can you believe when I was little I used to cry when it happened? Ha!" Marcy joked, veiling the fact that she still gets a little hurt whenever one of her adorable Fluffals gets sliced, diced, and bound by her Edge Imps. "I don't think I've seen you around here, though. My name's Masumi Sakamoto... But most people call me 'Marcy'! You a first year student too? It'd be nice to talk to someone in my grade for once!~"
“Hmm...just one year makes a difference? Well, perhaps at times but there’s nothing that says that you couldn’t have bested that guy today. First years can be just as good as second years and even third years, but I also understand the likelihood of that happening too.” A soft chuckle left his lips as he straightened his hat. He knew that the first years were always seen as the bottom of the totem pole by the other students of higher years, but Jinsei believed that even first years can be wildcards of sorts and can even best their upperclassmen.
“Their Fusion Summon style is wicked awesome. Certainly a surprise and I don’t blame you for crying when you first saw it. Quite the sight indeed.” Jinsei then remembers the first time he’s seen the monster archetype performing Fusion and it was...just wow. The girl’s voice had brought him out of his thoughts as she introduced herself as Masumi Sakamoto, or just Marcy for short. “A pleasure to meet you, Marcy. I’m Jinsei Terumi, a first year student like you. I tend to really leave my dorm for food, duels, and classes. So, that’s probably why you haven’t seen me around yet.” He chuckles a bit sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“So, what made you choose Fluffals as your deck of choice, Marcy? Any particular reason or just the fact that they’re super adorable?”
Post by Masumi Sakamoto on Aug 9, 2021 2:08:49 GMT
"Rarely leave your dorm, huh? Good thing you're out now then, huh? I mean, it's great out here! Staying in's just gonna get boring when there's so much to do out here. I could never buy into it, but I guess some people are just better being alone than I am, heh.~" she remarked with a dismissive shrug. It wasn't so much the "staying in" part that didn't click with her as it was the "being alone" part. People were awesome to have around! Who wouldn't want to be surrounded by friends 24/7?
...Well, probably the people who thought Masumi was too clingy. With a mindset like hers, that sentiment isn't too hard to come by when she has a bad habit of approaching people and refusing to cut ties in unwanted connections. That also explained her difficulty making friends despite her personality being extrovertist taken to its absolute extreme. Being "a little much at times" was her to a T.
"Oh! That's actually a really funny story. See, I actually made my own Deck a long time before this! It had cute stuff like Kuribohs, Sylvans, Fur Hires, Prank-Kids, and a bunch of generic stuff, too! My ace was this one card called 'Rabidragon': it was sooooo fluffy! And dangerous! That heckin' chonker was packin' a full 2950 Attack Points! I still have it, buuuut since it doesn't fit my Deck, I just kinda keep it now... Th-That, and people said my Deck kindaaaa... Sucked. Like, really bad. Some people said that about me, too, b-but that's just trash talk before a Duel anyways! I'm sure they didn't mean any of it, of course," Marcy mumbled, awkwardly tapping her index fingers together in front of her with an embarrassed blush. 'Rabidragon' was still among her favorite cards, but unfortunately some cards just didn't get the support they needed to thrive. To this day, she still tries to forget how her former ace monster was called 'Bad-Eyes White Dragon' due to its 50 Attack Point deficit and lack of support compared to the classic Blue-Eyes.
She popped open the Deck Box at her hip and begin sorting through her cards. "So that happened: I wanted to go here, but my parents said that I had to change my Deck. I was looking through a card catalogue, and BOOM!" she perked up rapidly, withdrawing a Level 1 Effect Monster and a Level 8 Fusion Monster for Jinsei to see: Fluffal Cat, followed by Frightfur Sabre-Tooth. "Da-dada-daaaa! New aces! I saw Fluffal Cat in the ad, and Fluffal Cat's super good for helping me bring out Frightfur Sabre-Tooth! I figured out how to use 'em and enrolled here!"
Her expression dropped once again, wincing. "...Aaand I lost all three of my proctored Duels. And I don't think I did too good on my written test either. They had to call me back in for a rematch, and I just barely got away with a win there 'cuz I got super lucky with my hand. But it's fate! Totally fate that I'm here now!" Masumi explained, dropping the two cards back into her Deck Box and patting the lid closed. While she hadn't intended on explaining her entire situation in one go, the words just kept coming one after another. "Phew. Sorry about that, sometimes I get a little carried away with my story! What matters is that I'm here, right? What about you?~"
Unbeknownst to her, Masumi Sakamoto was on thin ice in Liberta as it was. Nobody knew about that aside from faculty, who knew well that failing a semester meant her immediate expulsion.

As Jinsei listened to Marcy’s story, he nodded along and clung onto every word. The many archetypes that she listed off were definitely cute and hearing that Rabidragon used to be her ace monster caused a light smile to spread across his face. “That’s awesome. Despite it being just a normal monster, Rabidragon packs a powerful punch. Makes you wonder why there’s no support for it, sadly.” A Rabidragon Fusion, Synchro, XYZ, Pendulum, or Link Monster would be super cool to see in action.
He then watches Marcy take out her cards to show off, causing Jinsei’s eyes to widen a bit with awe. “Interesting. So they work together and produce great synergy, awesome. So, that’s how Marcy Sakamoto arrived to Liberta, what a story.” Jinsei chuckled once more before continuing. “Hey, you’re right: all that matters is that you made it here and you now have a chance to better your skills with your deck. You gotta take all the losses to learn from them before the wins can come rolling in, you know?” The girl then asked about how Jinsei got himself to Liberta and he was willing to share his story as well.
“Well, I got into the game due to my mom. And once I did, I fell in love with everything about it. The monsters, lore behind them, art style, everything. So, I eventually learned about Liberta after we moved here to Silvershine and I wanted to enroll. Buttttt, my dad wasn’t on board at first and wanted me to duel him to see my resolve. I beat him and now I’m here. The proctor exam wasn’t too bad but it was fun.” Jinsei explained with a smile before reaching down to his deck box on his belt, taking out his cards to show to Marcy: Elemental HERO Neos and the Neo Spacian monsters.
“This is the main man that helped me through all my duels along with his space cadets. Their teamwork is what drew me to them and I’ve been in love ever since.”

Pouting and making a face, Marcy slowly shook her head with a lighthearted gripe. "I mean, I guess... But I was kinda hoping I could skip the whole 'learn from losses' part and just start winning already. You'd think if any school could put together something to make that happen, it'd be this one," she elaborated, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly. "If learning really happened a heck of a lot from losing, I'd be pretty smart with my win-loss record. So far it's just really discouraging."
She nodded along with Jinsei's reasoning and history behind going to Liberta, trying to draw up some sort of pattern in her head in the process. She took in the information in earnest and sought understanding, but couldn't quite pin down her "reason" why she was falling behind. (Hmm... Is it because Jinsei's dad didn't like him going here? Mom and Dad always encouraged me and all. It sounds really bad to say I don't appreciate their support- I really, really do! But they didn't really test this "resolve" thing that he said. Then again, they work at Kaiba Corp: of course they won't have as much time to spend playing with me. It's always "project" this and "deadline" that. Unless...!)
"OH! MY PARENTS NEVER TRIED THEIR BEST IN A DUEL AGAINST ME!!~"
Her revelation came seemingly out of thin air, prompting her to flinch in realization with an awkward chuckle moments later. Right: inside voice. A few passing students shot her a worried, off-put glare as they wondered just what this girl's issue was. "...Whoops, sorry. Wh-What I meant to say was that's probably why I'm feeling really down about losing! And here I thought some of those kids in class were just being mean. They could see the issue before I even could!~" Masumi continued on, scratching the back of her head with a rather goofy grin. Her jump to that conclusion may as well have been an Olympic record, but at least she didn't seem bothered by people mentioning her parents' positions.
"See, my folks work at Kaiba Corp working on programming things. They're always really, really, REALLY busy with stuff. And because I didn't have a lot of super close friends who were super into Dueling like me, I just haven't really been pushed that far before! A lotta people here say I only got in 'because of my parents' positions', but I thought the whole time they were trying to say they got me in: when in reality, it's the opposite! I just haven't really had that many super-tough Duels, so I just need some time to adjust! Ha ha: it's all coming together now!~"
Not even two seconds later, however, Marcy's mouth curled into a confident smile as her left hand moved up to pull on the device on her right wrist. With an audible click, she slid her grip around the base of her Duel Disk system and turned the machine back on. The device flashed twice before bursting to life, the display having reset from her previous loss. The wristband that kept it around her wrist was littered with bedazzles and sparkles: most likely a DIY project gone terribly wrong to everyone else but her. Shooting Jinsei a wink and pointing towards him dramatically, she giggled in excitement.
"Cool Neo Spacians, but can you walk the talk- Wait, that's not right... How about you put your monsters where your mouth is- No, not that... Ooh, forget the witty catchphrase! Let's Duel, Jinsei! You're really, really good at getting me thinking about this stuff, and so far all ya did is just light my fire! And when the Marcy Train gets a-movin', it's time to get a-Duelin'!~"
Post by Jinsei Terumi on Aug 21, 2021 23:14:09 GMT
As Marcy had given compliments to his Neo Spacians, Jinsei would blink to himself for a moment as he watched the girl prepare her Duel Disk and ask the young man for a duel. Her words caused another light chuckle to escape his lips and while he COULD burst her bubble and just deny the challenge; that wasn’t his style and would gladly accept the challenge she was throwing out. With a nod and a bright smile, he returned the cards back to his deck and prepared his Duel Disk as well that he had on him when he decided to visit the Arena.
“How can I deny such a fiery challenge, Miss Sakamoto? Granted, you might need to work on your witty catchphrase, but it’s alright, you got time to do that.” Jinsei grinned, sliding his deck in the deck holder of his disk: a modern model that he hadn’t gotten the chance to pizzazz yet like Marcy had done hers. Though, he wouldn’t have gone with so many...bejewels and the like. “Glad to hear that I managed to light the fire under you and brought out your bright spirit. This should be a fun duel!” He gave a pearly white smile as he reached up to adjust the cap on his head.
“Let’s rock!” He gestures with a dramatic point and pose as Marcy had done with him.

Smiling in response to the accepted challenge, she withdrew her deck from the small box at her hip and relinked the cards to her Duel Disk. A quick shuffle randomized them, and just like that, the cards were stacked to be thrown down. "Catchphrase schmatchphrase: I'm goin' all out for this one, Jinsei! Let's get this party started!~" Marcy cheered with overwhelming enthusiasm. Her field display flashed to life in a brilliant glimmer in front of her, from Field Spell Zone to Deck. By default, Master Rules were the go-to game ruleset. Liberta's added function of "Limit Duels" were intriguing, but it wasn't something that was taught yet nor had she found anyone willing to try it out. So, despite the functionality being there, the prospect would have to wait this time around.
"Field: set! Let's bring these monsters to life!~" Masumi declared, hustling back out to the duel field that she just came out of. Almost immediately, the Solid Vision link from her device pinged with the arena's layout, linking and synchronizing the two. Now any monster that was summoned had its designated place, and could be seen on a bigger scale for even curious spectators to witness. The peppy first year stopped on the red side platform and spun around, flashing Jinsei a wink and a peace sign. "I'm all raring and ready to go! You know the drill: draw five cards, aaand..."
"LET'S DUEL!"
MASUMI: 8000 LP JINSEI: 8000 LP
...Oh dear. While she did have an easy option, nothing she had could bring out her ace so soon. Fluffal Bear, Edge Imp Sabers, Fluffal Penguin, Polymerization, and Fluffal Sheep was her starting hand. Versatile indeed, but she had to get lucky if she didn't want to stop on one Fusion monster. (Geez, what the... Hm. I could just fuse Fluffal Penguin and Edge Imp Sabers together to hope for a Frightfur Patchwork or something from Penguin's effect, or I could Link Summon Cross-Sheep using Penguin and Sheep! Not to mention using Fluffal Bear's effect from my hand to pull out Toy Vendor so I can take a chane there... Ooh, why'd I have to get a hand that relies so much on chance?!)
Right out of the gates, Masumi's puzzled expression towards her own hand was a terrible poker face. She couldn't muster up a bluff to say she had a great hand in the first place, meaning if Jinsei picked up on it, playing it safe was unnecessary. (This is really, really bad. Elemental HERO cards do, uh... Ah shoot, they can do a lotta different stuff depending on what you build them with, and I forgot which ones he showed me! Was that Vision HERO, or was it Masked HERO? Destiny HERO, maybe? Evil HERO?! I was too hyped up about this to remember if it was even a Fusion Monster or not! Just gotta wait for him to play something, then think of a way around it. Keep it cool, Marcy: you got this!)
"U-Uh... You go first, since I challenged you! Hit me with your best shot!~"
Post by Jinsei Terumi on Aug 25, 2021 12:27:32 GMT
Once the field was set and ready for the duel, Jinsei yet again couldn’t help but chuckle lightly at Marcy’s mannerisms, already enjoying the duel before it began. He began by drawing his first five cards and he was given the first turn. He briefly took notice of Marcy’s face and picked up on her facial expressions. It was probably best if he focused on his own hands and hoped he could do something with them. Glancing down at his hand, he saw Elemental HERO Stratos, Polymerization, Neo Space Connector, Neo Spacian Aqua Dolphin, and Elemental HERO Honest Neos. Not bad, but Jinsei decided to start things off nice and steady.
“Alright, I summon Elemental HERO Stratos! And with his special ability, I’m allowed to grab a HERO monster from the deck and add it to my hand. And the monster I choose is...Vision HERO Vyon!” Once the Wind warrior had shown up on the field, Jinsei searched his deck for his chosen monster, revealing it to Marcy before adding it to his hand and shuffled his deck afterwards. “Okay, not a bad first turn but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves…” He thought to himself before shooting a small smile over to the girl.
“I think that’ll do it for my turn, Marcy. Let’s see those Fluffals and Frightfurs party it up, yeah?”
