[attr="class","hearttext"] The late evening twilight called out, the cries of birds echoing out as night approached and the day slowly began to end. The usual hustle and bustle from students returning home or to their dorms had began to die down, lights flickering on as the last fingers of sunlight slipped away into the cool of the night. Ariane had found herself rooted in front of a vending machine, the bright, cold light painting her figure in the dark as the machine hummed away, the most prominent sound drowning out almost everything else as the vendor buzzed to keep its contents fresh and cold.[break][break]
Ariane had already gotten changed out of her school uniform, a simple black hoodie scrawled with a brand name in bright red, a basic skirt and tights. The day had been rather tiring for the girl, and worst of all she'd found herself out of coffee, one of her dear comforts despite her age. While the convenience store was just behind the vending machines, they were far too overpriced & she couldn't quite get the grind she wanted despite who should have been supplying the place, and she didn't particularly want to go out to the place she'd first gotten them from with her legs practically feeling like jelly after all the running around she had to do throughout the day. For now, canned coffee would suffice.[break][break]
For now the quiet brunette was perusing the vending machine window, having a preference for black coffee, though to her slight disappointment seeing only types of coffee milk.
Far and away, the night-time was Rexi's domain. Something changed about the city when it was bathed in the ebbing light, as the sun set and the moon rose, that brought a brilliant, bubbly smile to the teenager's face. Besides, all the best snack stores only opened later on in the evening! Well... Rexi considered them to be snacks; for most, it was more like an entire meal. Even now, the fresh-faced student was stuffing her face with a sandwich wrap, humming an off-key rendition of a marginally popular rock song.
She was certainly high-spirited, almost skipping along the sidewalk. Rexi had dressed for the marginal chill in the air; a cream-coloured sweater accompanied by a navy jacket, a pair of black designer jeans and small, one-inch heels that shone in the light of every street lamp she passed. Each tell-tale 'click' created a baseline for her humming as she approached the local convenience store. Rexi needed supplies.
Half an hour later, she was leaving the store with a plastic bag filled with ingredients of all kinds, as well as a few snacks to stow away in her bedroom. A thirst overcame her, however, after she was around halfway done with her sandwich. She considered turning around, going back to the store, but... honestly, she felt awkward about going there twice in one day. What kinda idiot does that?! Thus, the self-professed princess had two choices. Suffer until she got home, or hit up a vending machine.
She wasn't into suffering.
It came as something of a surprise, as she rounded the corner, to find another person mulling over their decisions. She looked... possibly familiar? Rexi couldn't tell. Maybe the girl was in her class? Either way, it didn't look as though our pampered protagonist was going to get her drink until Ariane made her decision. So, her thought process was simple. Strike up a conversation, make a new friend, get something to drink! A perfect plan.
Sauntering over, Rexi positioned herself a couple of feet away, leaning against the wall beside the vending machine. Between bites of her sandwich wrap, she tilted her head, pasting an adorable, impish smile on her face.
"Whatcha thinking about getting?" she mumbled. She had a pleasant lilt to her voice, though it was partially obscured by food at present. She had, of course, been taught that talking with her mouth full was bad manners, but there was so much to talk about, and so much to eat! She'd never find time to do both individually.
As Ariane was about to pick a can of iced mocha, a sudden intrusion had caught her by surprise, her attention quite clearly narrowed down to the options presented by the cold droning machine. She'd almost began to reach out to tap away at the machine before Rexi's question had caught her attention.[break][break]
"Ah."
[break]
Ariane's gaze had raced from the machine to the source of the voice, her eyes widening in surprise as she'd remained still and by all means was comparable to a deer stuck in traffic. There hadn't been any particular reason for Ariane's reaction, akin to a burglar who's been caught red-handed, she simply had been surprised. It took a few awkward seconds for Ariane to straighten herself up and respond in turn, "Oh, just an iced mocha... I don't really see anything else I want." She said matter-of-factly, taking a few seconds more to realise that the girl in front of her was probably waiting for her own turn at the vending machine. Ariane's face reddened ever so slightly before returning to her decision, hastily tapping away at her option and rummaging her hoodie's pocket for her wallet. She'd been too focused to notice the girl's eating habits, nor the sizeable groceries she'd had.[break][break]
While Ariane had originally intended to grab a good number and stuff what she couldn't carry in her pockets, in her concerned haste she'd only ended up picking out one before stepping aside for Rexi after paying for and collecting her drink. It was at this point that she'd had a good look at the girl, swearing she was someone that Ariane recognised—presumably another student in her class—and more importantly noticed the bags she was totting around.[break][break]
"Uh, say... did you need help carrying some of that?"
To call Rexi gluttonous would be using the term exceptionally lightly. While Ariane deliberated a few moments longer, the brunette continued stuffing her face with what could only be described as the speed of legends. Chew, chew, swallow, chew, chew, swallow. She even went so far as to poke her tongue out to pluck an escaped fragment of food from the corner of her mouth. She might look like a million bucks, but she sure didn't act like it.
She was listless, to say the least. Without any meaningful curfew, as long as she managed to get out of bed the next morning in time for classes, Rexi didn't care about spending time waiting. Crumpling the now-empty paper packaging, she gave it a casual toss into the air twice, before lobbing it into the trash can. The fact that it was barely six feet away pretty much described her athletic abilities; much further and she'd have missed entirely.
"Coffee, huh?" she hummed, tapping one finger against her chin; nails adorned with a very subtle pink. "That's so mature! I can't drink the stuff, just makes me blegh, y'know?" She accompanied that statement with a puffing of her cheeks, bloating up like a pufferfish. She soon devolved into a small giggling fit, covering her mouth with her hand. Apparently she lacked any semblance of shame, with how dorky that expression looked.
Once the vending machine was freed of its servitude, Rexi pushed herself away from the wall, bright purple gaze scanning the options. Deep thought overcame her as she weighed the pros and cons, even going so far as to read the nutritional information and calories——ah, who was she kidding? Her fingers quickly sought out a can of orange soda, and quicker still slid a credit card past the reader. Ducking down to retrieve the can, she let the handle of her bag hang in the crook of her elbow.
"Huh? Oh, this?" She let her eyes drift down. Her sack overfloweth, to coin a phrase. "Ah, you're a sweetie. I'll be 'kay though. Had to buy stuff for dinner tomorrow, but they didn't have most of what I wanted." Oh. That bag was for a single meal. That's concerning. Even moreso when it wasn't even her first choice stuff. Though considering how rapidly she wolfed down that sandwich...
"Oh, right! I almost forgot!" she exclaimed, hopping up to her full height, which... admittedly, wasn't that tall to begin with. "Name's Rexi! You, um. You go to Liberta, right? I think? Waaaaiiit, maybe I'm being stupid... maybe?" The internal argument that ensued was quickly quashed with an idle shrug. "Even if you don't, pleased to meetcha!" She beamed a grin that could light up a room by itself.
The girl in the hoodie hadn't quite noticed how quickly Rexi had eaten in the short time they'd spent together, though she had felt rather confused, as if something was missing—the voracious girl had sounded a bit more muffled just prior, not that Ariane had figured that out—though, unable to figure out just what that was, Ariane put it aside as she waited, she felt it somewhat rude to just leave after a conversation had started, after all.[break][break]
Ariane felt somewhat troubled by Rexi's statement—her? Of all people? Mature? That just didn't sound right to the girl, "I just kind of got into it as a kid, there were uh, coffee-flavoured candies somewhere I used to go to often." She explained, she just liked the taste of coffee and the different ways it could be made, sure it was something adults drank more often but it didn't seem odd to her to have enjoyed it. Nonetheless, she did smile a little at the odd face the girl had made in regards to coffee.[break][break]
... wait, did she just say 'tomorrow'? Ariane could have sworn she'd heard the words 'dinner' and 'tomorrow', yet the crammed groceries seemed far too much for one girl to eat on her lonesome. Ariane had ruffled the back of her own head, the cool air of the approaching night flowing in between the wisps of hair caused by the disturbance as she'd tried to figure things out. A mixture of concern and a feeling of trouble etched on her face before she'd figured out her own reasoning—the girl must have room mates! That'd explain why she had so much to carry.[break][break]
By the time Ariane had figured out and explained to herself the reasoning behind the engorged bag, she'd been thrown a sudden introduction, "Oh! Yeah, I do! Er... go to Liberta, my name's Ariane," She'd returned a somewhat awkward introduction back, "It's nice to meet you too, Rexi," she quickly added on with a smile, had an outside party overheard the conversation—and Ariane had shortly realised after her response—they'd seemed rather silly with that comment... considering the both of them were standing on school grounds. In fact, Ariane was just about to ask Rexi if she wanted someone to walk her back to her dorm, mouth agape and ready to speak and all, she'd stopped herself just as she'd taken a breath to communicate.
